Thank you so much. I recently did two Jiffy Mix layer tubs. On my very first one I didn't know what to do. I had read "leave it very fluffy", so I left it to where there was a lot of air pockets. Little mushrooms started growing there and then being consumed by the sub, whole tub looked chaotic. It did pin well and worked out fine. I fixed that for my second tub, but am looking forward to trying cvg now.

Folks I’ve had a couple of tubs go bad.  Dumped em.  Now I’ve Got a grain jar that I was going to run to a shoebox…

But I’m suspicious?

Anyone agree?

Okay, I will take a shot at this. The picture of the bottom looks good. The moisture on the right side of picture 1 looks like it could be just condensation.
However, in the middle picture, there is a grain in the upper left that is pressed against the glass that is not colonized at all on that side (clean condensation shouldn't stop colonization). To add to this, some of the moisture to the upper right looks more gelatinous than water alone would look if it were only condensation. Pictures can be deceptive, but the uncolonized grain against the glass and the sticky looking fluid would point to being slightly bacterial.

I would still at least top fruit it for a clone, and it will likely give you some fruit if you spawn it. But if you are shooting for perfection, canopies and high yields, this is not quite there yet. Well on the way, though.

Thank you Rev, this has definitely given me a lot to think about. I've been running my grain for 90 mins but I could increase the time to 2 hrs and see if that makes a difference.

The other, more likely culprits, are my filters. I've been using Tyvek since it was the only locally available option I could source and I didn't want to deal with ordering from several countries away. No one sells SFDs here, but I looked up what they're actually made of and found a local supplier that sells 0.22 PTFE filters, which should be exactly what I'm looking for. I could also try unmodded lids but my European jars barely have any thread on them anyway, so that might not be viable.

I'm also a twitchy mf so I bump my SAB sometimes and that could be messing up everything, this one will be more difficult to deal with but there's no rush. I already got enough fruits to take care of me for a long time so I can afford to take it slow and work towards getting a full canopy.

@Adasadas, check out my pics on the previous page and the responses afterwards. Yours are looking bacterial with  multiple uncolonized grains and the mycelium itself looks off to me. Did you start to shake the jar before taking the pictures? The grains at the top look separated from the colonized mass below them.

OKAY I just want to make sure before I spawn more tubs, I have a bucket of cococoir that was prepared for older tubs, so the bucket has been opened a few times, would it be fine to use it again or should I re-pasteurize or prepare new coco?

It's fine as long as it is still at field capacity.

Anyone here ever experience APE taking forever to colonize grain?

Yeah man, I've noticed some of these rare genetics are extremely picky/sensitive.  I've given once healthy grain spawn jars a shake at 30% for them not to recover. I won't be doing this anymore will wait for atleast 50%

I've found the following to be quite helpful. Incorporating an additional breathing filter + using more LC upon inoculation. I'll do a whole standard size syringe.

I'm new to the rarer genetics as well, and they do not seem to behave the same as the standard cubes ive worked with in the past.

Would love to here someone else chime in about this though.

Why did I get so small fruits? They are like my thumb at best. I only harvested the two to the left because they were dropping spores.

I am growing in a glas with coir. I do not know the ratio. I am currently colonizing a shoebox with a pseudo layer. The rest of the spawn which were a bunch of grains were run like an experiment with only coir in the glas. The spawn-substrate ratio could be anything between 1:4 to 1:8. I grow it in the glas in the picture with a bag with 6 holes that I have punched. I mist it 2-4 times a day.

So the question is: Why are they so small?

You can't expect giant fruit from such a small container. The more water available to them (ie from more substrate) the bigger they grow, to some extent. Id' wait to see what the shoebox does, that'll be a better indicator.

Short fruit can also be from genetics or a bad growing environment. If that was just an open glass in which you misted 2-4 times a day that would be really irregular FAE/humidity for them, not great.

These are B+, which I've read can have little white caps on top of the main cap, but most of the time the white cap was very small in my last few shoeboxes. These guys have HUGE white caps compared to the rest of the cap and stem. Anyone else get this?

Fairly compressed.

Steak should only have salt n pepper. Cooked rare. Over wood.

Hey mushboy! I was inspired by your open air grows and am leaving one of my tubs open while at home to experiment. I'm guessing I'm over misting because my mushrooms are getting fat and striped. I live in a super dry climate and finding that balance is hard. How are your growing conditions and how frequently/heavily do you mist?

I also wanted to ask, do you take extreme precautions with open air grows or do you really play it that loose. I'm even reluctant to turn on my potentially dusty AC right now.

Any suggestions on autoclavable vials for archival? I'm told that PCing them with the distilled in them is necessary before adding wedges, by our Discord TCs. I'm still getting around to testing these polypropylene ones, but I doubt the lids are going to make it.

I'd like to go as small as possible. 15mL too big.

I have these and they seem great. 2 mL, dirt cheap, and they don't leak. The listing ALSO says they are pre-sterilized though I have not tested that yet.

I use cryovials and I swear by them. I got a 500 pack of 2ml for sending mailers. For cooking I use an 8oz jar with it. I insert a paper towel in the bottom and kind of form it to the jar. It holds 20 vials nicely. Open it up when you're ready to inoculate. In this way I prepare many in advance. The lids shouldn´t be a problem unless they are substituted or defective from manufacturer.

Your mush are infested with microscopic mites. the little black specks all over coupled with the chewed up appearance of the fuzz around the bases also with little black spots.

Mites.

I threw that box out. It was on the 3rd flush anyway and better safe than sorry.

Does the wavy caps mean anything related to the mites?
