choosing your words wisely
    #2877302 - 07/11/04 04:09 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I think that people underestimate the importance of word choice. Certain words and phrases have a lot of gravity and should not be tossed around lightly. Also, I think that exageration and hyperbole lead to misunderstanding.

That is why I try not to say things like

"I'm starving"

"I feel like I'm about to die"

"It was the worst thing in the world"

"He's the dumbest person ever"

"I hate you"

"I love you"

Also, I avoid uttering things that are untruthable and exagerating for the sake of a good story. Was it Mark Twain that said "Never let the truth get in the way of a good story." Yeah, I don't think so...

Sure. Did I ever tell you about the time I caught a five hundred pound catfish with my bare hands?

I agree with your point, Ed. But at the same time, I think it's important not to spend too much effort trying to decide what to say. I think that the faster a thought is verbalized, the more genuine it is. But I know this isn't always the case...moderation of both, right?

It's funny how several topics lead to the conclusion that "moderation is key."

Its all in the way it is expressed. If I say I am starving, obviously I am probably not in as much need of food as some young kids in Africa might be. However, obviously if you are with friends and say "Man, I'm fucking starving", I don't think it would be taken quite so literally. What is said is just as important as how it is said. "God damn, man, I'm fucking starving!" followed by a laugh is going to have an entirely different meaning than "I... I.. I'm. starvinnngg....." followed by some gasps for air and perhaps falling over.

Language doesn't have to be taken seriously all the time. Especially with the English language. Sometimes the problem isn't with the person who is expressing something, it lies with the interpreter. Perhaps I will refrain from saying "What is up?" in the future.... :smirk:

No, you didn't. How much did it weigh?

How much did what weigh?

Reminds me of Homer...
"And how much are you charging for this free weekend?"

"It's free."

"I see. And when is this weekend?"

"It's this weekend."

Good point, fireworks god. How you say it and the way it's interpretted are two other important factors.

disclaimer: just kidding, man..

Insert an "I think" mentally in front of eveything I say that seems sketchy, because I certainly don't KNOW much. Also; feel free to yell at me.
