When I get it that thick I usually peel it off. You can dry and eat it and the tub pins fine afterwards.

Doing PF Tek and have 3 jars that are all white, 3 jars at about 70-80%, and 2 about 60% colonized. I was doing some searches on when to dunk and roll and read a couple times to let them continue to colonize for another week after they are are fully colonized to "consolidate." These weren't the newest posts and they weren't from TCs. Is this still the best practice to leave them another week after the cakes are fully white before the dunk and roll?
EDIT: Thanks TripDawg! More patience it is.

Thanks for that. Will try to peel it of. At least I could make some prints from other trays so the goal is reached, happy with it ๐

i have never used lime in tandem with pasteurization but it can be beneficial, although not necessary. If you do, don't add too much, as too high ph will be detrimental to growth. it does make it more inhospitable to harmful microorganisms though. In the context of manure vs straw, I am not sure exactly how it would translate. if we operate under the assumption that straw has less bioload and microorganisms than manure, it is possible the lime will just be moot there even if it is beneficial with straw. That is to say, the amount of lime needed to mitigate or make a difference with microorganisms in the manure could be moot or even detrimental. If you do, a small amount should work though, one tsp/gal h2o. somebody please give me a layup if needed.

Do you think fish/seafood would be comparable to poop on the microorganism front? The whole cold pasteurization thing makes me think of the process of ceviche. Probably totally different, but just spitballing thoughts and curious if anyone had tried it.

Anyone had experience with straw or hpoo or both?
I've had awesome yields with hpoo which is my go to but I have a bunch of straw I'd like make a substrate out of. Tried pasteurized straw once and failed likely due to super old grain spawn. Curious if the yields with straw are comparable to hpoo
Was also considering being a bit adventurous (perhaps a little too adventurous) and combining the 2 together and maybe even throwing in some black kow (which I also have never used)
I don't know, what do you guys think?

All of the above are good substrates. I prefer a straw/poo combo.
The main thing that substrate provides is water, so, theoretically if you were to make all the other variables stable, the best yielding substrate is the one that holds the most water.

Straw and manure require different pasteurization procedures, so combining a substrate of straw and manure is a lot of work for no real benefit. Straw requires a pasteurization bath while manure requires to be brought to field capacity and pasteurized in some sort of vessel such as a jar or bag using water as the heat transfer medium.
With straw it is important to cut into small, 1-2 inch pieces so the mycelium can run through with ease. Another thing about wheat straw is that even after being pasteurized, it becomes prone to contamination after about 2 weeks. With this in mind, it is ideal to use an aggressive culture so that the straw can become fully colonized before it becomes prone to contamination.
All of my documented grows here have been grown using a bulk substrate of 50/50 coir and pasteurized horse manure. By no means am I telling you to not to use wheat straw, and/or horse manure as bulk substrates. Only pointing out a few of their characteristics so that you may make an informed decision moving forward.

Can you elaborate a little bit on this? I assumed straw is pasteurized in a bath due to ease of doing a lot. I've always gotten away with mixing it with poo and heat pasteurizing like you would peat - bring up to 145-165 fยฐ for an hour or 2 in a pot or the oven.
