Here in Michigan I've been having problems finding mushrooms. When I found how common Panaeolus subbalteatus mushrooms were I wa s overjoyed.

I have a question about the lookalikes of it.

Are there any that are poisonus or non-active lookalikes that have a spoee print that is jet black on computer paper? Thank you. :smile:

There's plenty of non active look-a-likes(all belong to the Panaeolus genus). None of them are poisonous, but you might have to deal with some hardcore diarreah the next day.

Do any of them grow on cow dung with black spore prints? I got a another question ididn't get answer. Why are you not suppose to pick pan subbs that are on cow poop anyways?

Panaeolus papilionaceus is a species of pan that grows on cow dung and is hallucinogenic I believe.

Apparently that was a misprint and they aren't active, at least that's what I hear from mj.

As far as other species that grow on cow dung, there's plenty of inactive Panaeolus which drop black prints. I saw tons of them out in the field today while looking for cubes.

Erowid Safety-Pick said it on the first image of theirs I believe. (about pan subbs on cow dung).

Is there anyway to tell if it is an active mushroom or not that looks like or is a pan subb without eating it?

Unfortunately, no. And you're only safe eating other Panaeolus... So the mushrooms you pick should have jet black spore prints if you plan on eating them.

And yes, it's normal for the stems to turn dark after picking them.

Thanks gumby and everyone else.

They all do have jet black spore prints. I ate a half of mushroom just to get used to the taste (it tasted good) and not to get high or anything. Is it normal to feel hot? Could just be nerves I guess. :\

I dont think its toxic but the ones im thinking about are a lot smaller than a Pan, Really tiny

several coprinus grow fro dung. a few coprinus species contain teh compound coprine, a chemical similar to anabuse [the stuff given to aloholics to make them feel sick when they drink]. if you are having hot fleshes since eating them, it sounds posible that you have eaten a coprine containing coprinus. this compound is not harmful, it just makes you uncomfrtable if you have it and any alcahol in your system at the same time.

Well I'm not a drinker, but I did get hot. I thought it was a panaleous type. A hlaf a mushroom is enough to make a relatively (160lbs) pound guy hot (warm wise)? Thank you for this new info.

(p.s. do coprinus have black spores?)
