OPINION: The Shroomery's Best TEK's - Let's Hear It! 12

Howdy Shroomerites!
We're in the midst of mulling over a front facing Shroomery website redesign. Our existing wiki-style content management system hasn't seen the level of active upkeep that we had hoped, and with mushroom cultivation becoming ever more mainstream by the day, we see an opportunity to streamline our main landing page in efforts to highlight our best quality content. Thus, allowing newcomers easier access to the best information we have available, presented in a visually immersive format that a keystone psychedelic community such as ours deserves.
Toward that end, we want to ask the community WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE TEK'S?
We intend to breakdown the main landing page into two primary divisions: Mushroom Cultivation & Mushroom Experience. Note, the forums are not going anywhere and the idea here is to feature them more prominently amidst the higher quality curated documents.
Nested within the Cultivation side of the main site, we intend to feature only a few of our most vetted and highly acclaimed cultivation tutorials. Ideally, we will have a very basic beginner's tutorial, perhaps a classic iteration of the PF Tek as a nod to our roots, as well as a more advanced Tek or two, including highlighting agar techniques.
With that in mind, I ask any and all of you who hold an opinion about what our best content is - doesn't matter if it's on the forums or the main site - what is it? Please provide a link in your response, and feel free to suggest a few different resources, you can even suggest specifically merging two or more existing tek's for one more prominent feature.
We want our community to have a voice in this project!
All ideas are welcome!

An indexed guide would be more valuable. The HHG is a good place to start.
Question before input: what will happen when a featured tek is updated? Like right now the PF tek post is the best post for that tek that we have and should be indexed, but it’s in dire need of an update.
Once updated, it would then take the place of the old post, right? Like this is tek focused, not necessarily post focused?
Sorry if that’s rambling I’m just curious

Please make it so that you can switch units of measurement in each tek.
Most teks use U.S. feet, cups, pints, etc. which are useless for the rest of the world.

There needs to be an easily indexable way to search teks and high traction posts that may not even use the TEK icon. The hardest thing for new forum users is using the search feature. Possibly categorizing these threads and an auto filter by views and replies to push more prominent teks and info threads to the top. Not sure if you can see a backlog of how many times certain teks have been linked but that would be the ultimate way to filter posts. Also ofcourse there is a disclaimer for old posts at the top of the thread, but I don't think that's enough to discourage people from following 2001 teks. I think there's alot of old threads that need to be moved to the archive and indexed in a similar way to the newer threads. Maybe a search updated, search archived, search all button within these systems could simplify the function.

Why make a list. Like with magic, the greatest joy if finding information for yourself. Searching the search forum for the word polyester and going through 2000 pages of information just to do that basic lid and tub design anyway. No one brings eatsyoualive teks, but his ability to turn things into yeilds in other based method still means there only one path to growing.

Wholeheartedly appreciate the feedback so far folks!
Great ideas , some that we've considered and some that we have not. Please keep them coming!
Quick point of clarification...
Although I do believe that an index-of-teks would be a valuable addition here, that sort of thing would likely fall under the purview of reprioritizing a main header sticky in our Cultivation Forum. In fact, that could be an effective way to actively port newcomers from the front facing website into our community forums, which is exactly the type of feeder link we are seeking to create wherever possible. This is by virtue of the fact that it will be far easier to update and augment our inventory on the forum, than it will be to add new pages on the main site.
This is a pretty major development project for us, a pretty big shift in how we've done things to date, with a potentially significant spend. Our aim in doing this is to help the Shroomery stay relevant, by becoming BOTH:- An easily accessible resource for the layman, while also offering...
- The depth of knowledge and experience that a true journeyman will appreciate.
We will be employing third party professional development services, and because of this, we need to distill the project into specific segments, such that we can evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of the developers we have chosen, by being assured of achieving incremental milestones (fully deliverable/functional pages/sections) throughout this process. In order to achieve full delivery of incremental milestones, we need to define them very clearly.
SO... by all means, keep coming at us with whatever ideas might come to mind, but recognize that at least INITIALLY, we are going to be focused strictly on redesigning the main landing page at Shroomery.org in a majorly simplified, visually stimulating manner. The existing main site content management system is likely to head to the archives, as this is not strictly a "skin" redesign, but a full distillation of our main site content. For this type of development, it's not going to be about an index-of-teks so much as redesigning/combining and presenting literally only a few of our BEST cultivation techniques in a neat and tidy package. In conjunction with this simplified presentation, we will embed pathways that lead folks into our forum culture for the deeper dive of data contained herein, including the invaluable and interactive Q&A that is available from the community.
In this way, we hope to make the most sought after, basic and useful information, readily accessible on anybody's first visit to Shroomery.org; while providing prominent links into the community for anyone inclined to dive down the rabbit hole. The way our landing page is now, it's information overload at best, and likely more accurately stated, a disarrayed archive of documents of highly variable quality that in turn make it very difficult for a total no0b to find what they want.
Here's a quick flowchart I threw together to outline the idea a little more clearly. Please don't mind the Matrix red/blue pill analogy, I don't expect it will be included in the final roll out, it was merely an analogy that I figured was appropriate in exemplifying what we are trying to achieve here.

Keep up the brainstorming everyone, your active participation in helping us decide which direction(s) to take will make this better!

You killed your own thread, geo.
That being said, I do not know how useful this may be, but I have a Mycology/mushroom growing tools thread that has been running for over 9 years. It showcases all kinds of trade related tools and DIY innovations that anybody of any skill set could look at, and decide what tools and innovations may best suit their needs and skill level. It may serve as useful. Great update to the site that you and Ythan are endeavoring upon.

This is amazing news. I’ve been a noob since Feb and trying to break down and digest all the info. So much is contradictory unless you have hours to dedicate to sifting through the beneficial and the erroneous. I think the updated TEK page should be updated and the outdated TEK thread merged somehow. I think this could really point newly interested growers in the right direction with a “thumbs up” list right next to a “thumbs down” list. Thanks for everything you are doing. I’ve learned so much from this site from the amazing TCs within the past few months. The information is vast, but the tech is archaic in moments.

Hi there,
I joined just to respond to this thread.
I think I'm part of your targeted demographic, as psilocybin goes mainstream: I read Michael Pollan, tried and successfully grew mushrooms via Reddit (Uncle Ben's), tried again and failed miserably, and ended up here to learn how to do it right.
And, to be honest, finding information that suits my needs has been arduous: I've spent dozens of hours searching and reading, and converting teks and posts into my own instructions.
This msg isn't a complaint - there's tremendous information here, but it's like a library without a card catalog, or even bookshelves, or librarians. This msg is actually a compliment: I'm glad to see that efforts are being made to take the very best information, distill it, and present it in a way that's accessible and engaging.
Regarding "all ideas are welcome": please hire content creators who, first and foremost, know about _instructional design_. And who understand audience analysis.
PS One more thing, unrelated: Winterland - I noticed the rose. June 9, '77. The whole show is great, but the second set - well, I think it's some of the best music they ever played. You probably know, but just in case you didn't, I'm letting you know. Because if you don't know, you really should know.

I’ve been here less than a year and I found a lot of really great stuff and it was easy to understand. I just clicked on people signatures to find a lot of them. People like to share their favorite write ups. But yes, making the site more user-friendly is going to attract more users and I’m all for that.

Edited to add: There’s definitely a lot of librarians - the people who help guide us through all the info are superheroes helping spread the benefits of mushrooms. I’m looking forward to seeing the site developments 😀

I would recommend adding a better system cataloging sections. So teks for certain stages or processes of cultivation can easily be found.
I.E. Mushroom Cultivation>First Steps> Agar> Best Agar Recipes, Teks, Etc Mushroom Cultivation> Fruiting> Monotub> Best Tub Teks Mushroom Cultivation> Ps. Cubensis> Spawn> WBS Prep Tek, Jar lid teks, etc.
But pretty much every tek can then select major tags that it would fall under and this would clean up a lot of search functionality.
*Edit* I was Stoned and had to clean up some wording

ive been asked to consolidate all the threads from hitchhikers guide into a single list.
hysteria did most of the work somewhere with a script and im still too lazy to do it.
but yeah. i should probably do that.
comebackkids surface condition thread is probably the most references tek out there.
strohs agar tek is STILL good after all these years.

The rest of the world can translate the measures themselves, just like I do.
The more relevant, useful, and difficult translation would be into whatever the most readily available vessels are in different places. We don't use myco-quarts because we hate the metric system. We use myco-quarts because Ball wide-mouth quart canning jars are widely available across the US. Same for half-pint wide-mouth jars and PF tek.

The most helpful pages for beginners starting out may be TEKs,
but the most helpful pages for learning about different species seem to have been crunched into single huge threads. We've got The Official Woodlovers Thread Official Copelandia/Panaeolus Thread Official Ps. Subtropicalis/Semperviva Thread Etc. etc.
I only recently realized that you can search within a thread, but this cannot be done using the 'search' page (only at the bottom of each thread).
These threads are huge, and getting bigger. Too inconvenient to read through.
I've been thinking, Why can't you organize things better.
Maybe P. cubensis should have it's own 'cultivation page', and the other species, as we get more and more information on them, should be organized in their own space.
We can encourage people to start out on TEKS, but a more comprehensive understanding comes from reading all about each species.
Woodlovers should have their own area; they have their own 'culture'
Lastly; Do we really have to have it where everyone has to make a post in a thread if they want to get notifications about that thread? It works really well, but everytime somebody adds an empty post or a or whatever emoji, Everyone has to scroll through that for the rest of eternity to distill out the good information.
There is a 'toggle favorite' button, but that doesn't work as well as the 'threads' feature. I'd love to get more threads in my 'threads' without having to go through them all and make posts to bloat up the threads.

Definitely some awesome references in here, my gosh things have changed since I was Tekkin.
My go to and fav was docs wbs tek. Simple processes and easy to understand with very little investment. Also old school af - shoutout to doc
https://www.shroomery.org/9030/Docs-Wild-Bird-Seed-Tek
Oh even the tek has a disclaimer do not use. Sheesh - if it worked in 1992 it can work now dagnabbit!!

I agree the updated PF Tek needs updated again. As does the water tub Tek (it links to a deleted tek and talks a lot about shutting off FAE for the first few days). Also agree that the Hitchiker's Guide should be front and center. And then maybe consider different skill levels in your front page. Easy, straight forward Teks for beginners starting with the Hitchhiker's guide and then some more advanced sections once you've digested and practiced with the basics. Puck Drop (Tiger Drop 3.0), for example, I found very interesting but I feel I'm about a year from ever trying something like this. If you have been here a long time, you may not realize how daunting a tek that combines PF Tek, agar, and grain would be to a noob.
I really like learning from videos, so when I find good threads with videos I'll bookmark them. Tiger Drop Cultivation Videos
Also, 12 years old, but I like this contamination thread. Much more thorough than that currently sticked thread. (EDIT, posted the wrong link before) How it should & shouldn't look - NEW CULTIVATORS GUIDE
What to do between flushes is something I feel is lacking, so this was a great addition: Beefs Punisher Tek. How Beef preps a delinquent sub for second flush: a true mycology confession For PF Tek, I've bookmarked threads that RR is commenting on from 2010, for example. Hopefully, that's still good advice, but it's all I've found. And seems specific to SGFC since it says to let it "dry out" in the tub for a week before resoaking.

Agar as easy as 123, still use it to this day!

I legit think the Rich Man's Guide part of the Hitchhikers Guide is what could have the biggest impact for noobs. I see so many people on here showing their clearly contaminated grows and complaining they spent a hundred dollars or more. The Rich Man's Guide can get you 3 monos start to finish for those $100 (and that's including the tubs!) and with a pretty high success rate.
$25 3- 3lb premade grain bags (shipped) Roughly $25 syringe $30 3 tubs $10 3 coir bricks $10 Verm (I like verm)
Edit: That Tek should be renamed The Easiest Way to Grow Mushrooms so people can land on that when they search instead of fuckin Uncle Ben's
All the other shit like alcohol, spray bottle, trash bag liner can be found at the dollar store

Cant we create the compendium like wiki type things with editing and commenting allowed by trusted members of a curation team? Or we just write up a program and let AI tell us the best way to formulate growing environs for the mycelium.

That's exactly what we have now, and for decades, it has been underutilized and lacking effective updates/management. Hence why we're gearing up to try something different.

I don't know if it's been mentioned already but I'll add this one for rye prep since it saves you a ton of headache with the whole soaking for 24 hours and then figuring out how to dry out that mess. Plus, it actually makes you a perfect jar of grain every single time.

I think this is one of the best, and am surprised it’s not been mentioned yet. I’m always late to the party.

Even says that it’s just an experiment to prove a point. It works better when you use bod modified tek.

Started with this & never used anything else. Not saying other grains aren't good, but I've had excellent results with this for the last 4 years.

I have heard great things about wild birdseed. But I’ve also heard of people getting frustrated with all the different sizes of grains.

The sunflower seeds are the only thing that bothers me. Some brands have more, some have less but when you put it in water & stir they all float to the top, so they're easily removed. Some people don't remove em at all. They just gives my jars a funky look.

I like wbs and millet. Maybe it’s the way it colonizes or fruits but I’ve had great results with it. Trying to decide what bag of grain to buy next but keep leaning towards wbs despite issues of getting it to field capacity.

Natives came up, in my yard, under the birdfeeder.

Muda’s Bottle Tek
Assuming that there is adequate headroom in the bottle, is it strictly necessary to break up pinning mycellium and expose it to more oxygen, in order to trigger fruiting?
Will fruiting happen naturally, under subtle temperature and atmospheric pressure changes, once the mycellium has collected enough resources?
For instance, native mushrooms all seem to fruit with a change in weather, without human intervention.

An enoki grower on Youtube gets the best of both worlds -- humidity dome and increased oxygen -- by placing a sleeve of clear plastic around the bottle.

Bit of an old thread but I just saw it now since it was linked from the newer thread.
Anyway, I strongly recommend standard good old PF Tek. If I was going to grow tomorrow, that's still what I'd start with. All you need to do is mix verm and BRF, put it in jars with dry verm layer, punch holes in the lid, cover with tinfoil, steam, remove tinfoil, cool, flame needle, inoculate, and wait. You don't even need alcohol or a SAB. Hell maybe I should write up a simple PF tek.
From that, I would take a sample of a fruit to agar, isolate, and spawn to a coir mono. That's literally all that I would do right there, even if I wanted to go as far as possible.
So basically I'd highly recommend PF Tek, and then as a more advanced optional step: isolating from fruit onto agar, and spawning to coir. The nice thing about PF Tek is that it's basically impossible to screw up.

agar is not an advance step its like making jello.
dont perpetuate that agar hate. i do agree pf is hard to fuck up.
because the cake is kept whole so bacteria and other issues dont interfere with recolonization if you spawn.
but agar is the truth. it is the way.

Well that's an advantage to agar! I wasn't trying to put agar down, I was trying to praise it
Edit: I agree though, agar is the way. But for a total beginner, again hard to fuck up PF Tek, and it's the perfect stepping stone to agar.
