Howdy Shroomerites!
We're in the midst of mulling over a front facing Shroomery website redesign. Our existing wiki-style content management system hasn't seen the level of active upkeep that we had hoped, and with mushroom cultivation becoming ever more mainstream by the day, we see an opportunity to streamline our main landing page in efforts to highlight our best quality content. Thus, allowing newcomers easier access to the best information we have available, presented in a visually immersive format that a keystone psychedelic community such as ours deserves.
Toward that end, we want to ask the community WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE TEK'S?
We intend to breakdown the main landing page into two primary divisions: Mushroom Cultivation & Mushroom Experience. Note, the forums are not going anywhere and the idea here is to feature them more prominently amidst the higher quality curated documents.
Nested within the Cultivation side of the main site, we intend to feature only a few of our most vetted and highly acclaimed cultivation tutorials. Ideally, we will have a very basic beginner's tutorial, perhaps a classic iteration of the PF Tek as a nod to our roots, as well as a more advanced Tek or two, including highlighting agar techniques.
With that in mind, I ask any and all of you who hold an opinion about what our best content is - doesn't matter if it's on the forums or the main site - what is it? Please provide a link in your response, and feel free to suggest a few different resources, you can even suggest specifically merging two or more existing tek's for one more prominent feature.
We want our community to have a voice in this project!
All ideas are welcome!

An indexed guide would be more valuable. The HHG is a good place to start.
Question before input: what will happen when a featured tek is updated? Like right now the PF tek post is the best post for that tek that we have and should be indexed, but it’s in dire need of an update.
Once updated, it would then take the place of the old post, right? Like this is tek focused, not necessarily post focused?
Sorry if that’s rambling I’m just curious

Please make it so that you can switch units of measurement in each tek.
Most teks use U.S. feet, cups, pints, etc. which are useless for the rest of the world.

The rest of the world can translate the measures themselves, just like I do.

There needs to be an easily indexable way to search teks and high traction posts that may not even use the TEK icon. The hardest thing for new forum users is using the search feature. Possibly categorizing these threads and an auto filter by views and replies to push more prominent teks and info threads to the top. Not sure if you can see a backlog of how many times certain teks have been linked but that would be the ultimate way to filter posts. Also ofcourse there is a disclaimer for old posts at the top of the thread, but I don't think that's enough to discourage people from following 2001 teks. I think there's alot of old threads that need to be moved to the archive and indexed in a similar way to the newer threads. Maybe a search updated, search archived, search all button within these systems could simplify the function.

Why make a list. Like with magic, the greatest joy if finding information for yourself. Searching the search forum for the word polyester and going through 2000 pages of information just to do that basic lid and tub design anyway. No one brings eatsyoualive teks, but his ability to turn things into yeilds in other based method still means there only one path to growing.

Wholeheartedly appreciate the feedback so far folks!
Great ideas , some that we've considered and some that we have not. Please keep them coming!
Quick point of clarification...
Although I do believe that an index-of-teks would be a valuable addition here, that sort of thing would likely fall under the purview of reprioritizing a main header sticky in our Cultivation Forum. In fact, that could be an effective way to actively port newcomers from the front facing website into our community forums, which is exactly the type of feeder link we are seeking to create wherever possible. This is by virtue of the fact that it will be far easier to update and augment our inventory on the forum, than it will be to add new pages on the main site.
This is a pretty major development project for us, a pretty big shift in how we've done things to date, with a potentially significant spend. Our aim in doing this is to help the Shroomery stay relevant, by becoming BOTH:- An easily accessible resource for the layman, while also offering...
- The depth of knowledge and experience that a true journeyman will appreciate.
We will be employing third party professional development services, and because of this, we need to distill the project into specific segments, such that we can evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of the developers we have chosen, by being assured of achieving incremental milestones (fully deliverable/functional pages/sections) throughout this process. In order to achieve full delivery of incremental milestones, we need to define them very clearly.
SO... by all means, keep coming at us with whatever ideas might come to mind, but recognize that at least INITIALLY, we are going to be focused strictly on redesigning the main landing page at Shroomery.org in a majorly simplified, visually stimulating manner. The existing main site content management system is likely to head to the archives, as this is not strictly a "skin" redesign, but a full distillation of our main site content. For this type of development, it's not going to be about an index-of-teks so much as redesigning/combining and presenting literally only a few of our BEST cultivation techniques in a neat and tidy package. In conjunction with this simplified presentation, we will embed pathways that lead folks into our forum culture for the deeper dive of data contained herein, including the invaluable and interactive Q&A that is available from the community.
In this way, we hope to make the most sought after, basic and useful information, readily accessible on anybody's first visit to Shroomery.org; while providing prominent links into the community for anyone inclined to dive down the rabbit hole. The way our landing page is now, it's information overload at best, and likely more accurately stated, a disarrayed archive of documents of highly variable quality that in turn make it very difficult for a total no0b to find what they want.
Here's a quick flowchart I threw together to outline the idea a little more clearly. Please don't mind the Matrix red/blue pill analogy, I don't expect it will be included in the final roll out, it was merely an analogy that I figured was appropriate in exemplifying what we are trying to achieve here.

Keep up the brainstorming everyone, your active participation in helping us decide which direction(s) to take will make this better!

You killed your own thread, geo.
That being said, I do not know how useful this may be, but I have a Mycology/mushroom growing tools thread that has been running for over 9 years. It showcases all kinds of trade related tools and DIY innovations that anybody of any skill set could look at, and decide what tools and innovations may best suit their needs and skill level. It may serve as useful. Great update to the site that you and Ythan are endeavoring upon.

Ok Geo.
I keep my most treasured writeups down in my signature. There is a honorable mentions page in the manual. All of those write ups are beyond excellent. I would standby any of them.

This is amazing news. I’ve been a noob since Feb and trying to break down and digest all the info. So much is contradictory unless you have hours to dedicate to sifting through the beneficial and the erroneous. I think the updated TEK page should be updated and the outdated TEK thread merged somehow. I think this could really point newly interested growers in the right direction with a “thumbs up” list right next to a “thumbs down” list. Thanks for everything you are doing. I’ve learned so much from this site from the amazing TCs within the past few months. The information is vast, but the tech is archaic in moments.

Hi there,
I joined just to respond to this thread.
I think I'm part of your targeted demographic, as psilocybin goes mainstream: I read Michael Pollan, tried and successfully grew mushrooms via Reddit (Uncle Ben's), tried again and failed miserably, and ended up here to learn how to do it right.
And, to be honest, finding information that suits my needs has been arduous: I've spent dozens of hours searching and reading, and converting teks and posts into my own instructions.
This msg isn't a complaint - there's tremendous information here, but it's like a library without a card catalog, or even bookshelves, or librarians. This msg is actually a compliment: I'm glad to see that efforts are being made to take the very best information, distill it, and present it in a way that's accessible and engaging.
Regarding "all ideas are welcome": please hire content creators who, first and foremost, know about _instructional design_. And who understand audience analysis.
PS One more thing, unrelated: Winterland - I noticed the rose. June 9, '77. The whole show is great, but the second set - well, I think it's some of the best music they ever played. You probably know, but just in case you didn't, I'm letting you know. Because if you don't know, you really should know.

I’ve been here less than a year and I found a lot of really great stuff and it was easy to understand. I just clicked on people signatures to find a lot of them. People like to share their favorite write ups. But yes, making the site more user-friendly is going to attract more users and I’m all for that.
