scientist have been woking on why germination happens after fires in many vegitated places...

they have discovered that there is a chemical in the smoke (totally new isolate) dubbed "butenalide", i may have mispelled that.  however, the chemical is responsible for germinating seeds that have been dormant for up to 100 years, and also aid in germination of almost ALL plants, vegetable, flower or whatever.  the butenalide sets of a chain reaction of chemicals already in the seed, like a key chemical, to alllow for germination! sweeet.

so its not the heat or the ash from the fire, but the smoke.  i have a few passiflora incarnata seeds that i havnt gotten to germinate (they are notoriously difficult sprouters), and ill be "smoking" them soon, and ill let you know the results.

but now a question came to my mind... usually (at least some of) these same plants are planted with boiling water for germination...
and it works too. - ???
example: mimosa scabrella, hostilis, acacias

very interesting. jack pines in my area need to be lite on fire. but thnto because of smoke. the heat opens up the cones.

FH ive never heard of planting with boiling water (but i dont read up on a wide variety of techniques)  ill go ahead and try to find an article and well see what it EXACTLY says :smile:

What Felix was talking about was a technique sometimes called scarification in which boiling water is poured over the seeds in a bowl and let to stand overnight. Then, the seeds are sprouted on a paper towel or planted and you get a much better germ rate than you would otherwise. It's about the only way to sprout certain acacias, mimosas and some other plants.
