My Grandpa and his blueberries...
    #2875733 - 07/10/04 12:57 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

My Grandma died a few years ago, and ever since then, my Grandpa hasn't been able to shake this horrible depression. He lives in Cape Cod, Massachusettes in this huge house all by himself. He's always so lonely. A couple of times every week, he'll call me to tell me about his day and about a thousand other insignificant things that it's almost painful for me to listen to.

Today, he called me and told me about these new blueberries they have at the supermarket that are canned in water and are very good for your immune system. He spent literally 30 minutes telling me about blueberries. For fuck's sake, I don't know what to do. I don't want to rush him off of the phone, but I can't keep talking to him for hours when I ned to be doing other things.

I feel bad for my Grandpa and don't want him to be lonely, but how can I make the endless calls stop?!

you could visit him...
sorry I see your in CA...

I miss my gramps.. only wish I could
still entertain his lonliness on the phone...
For real set a day and time for him to call...
Set aside that special time for him... no matter what...
Tell him to make a list of what you will talk about so he
won't forget...Tell him how mutch this will mean to you..
tell him about email.. and how he can write you as mutch as
he wants to...I live close to the cape but already have too many elderly people I visit... Only joking.... Good luck.... Levity....

You could suggest that he relocate closer to family...

that's tough. i'd maybe not answer the phone so often at the time of day he usually calls you. it's ok to not talk to him as often if he's rambling on about blueberries for half an hour.

Go visit! Im serious. When people call like that, they feel alone... and most of all I think he just wants to be ABLE to talk to someone. Visiting him would help him a lot with his depression im betting.

I live 3,000 miles away and am in school. Visiting is not an option.

Thats nothing. My grandma calls on average 5 times a day to talk about nothing or food. It's annoying as hell, but I know in later years i'll be hearing the phone ring and wish it was her.

Perhaps you can suggest that he sell his house and join a retirement community. Or perhaps sell the house and move to Ca with you. Old people can be set in their ways but he need someone. Hope you find a solution.

I am sure he would love to buy you a plane ticket. Its only 4 hours away.

Any ways just tell him the truth and tell him that you have to go if you have someplace to go. He would understand or maybe just call him so he isnt ontop of his game, throw him a left ya know. So you can make the call short and sweet. Then he knows that you cair and all is well.

At least your grandparent calls. I am sure mine say the same about me though. But once my parents split they never call. Seen them maybe 4 times in five years. They just kinda forgot about my sis and I.
