Iffy on the Jiffy
    #2875087 - 07/10/04 03:14 AM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Well. my friend is thinking about casings, at first verm/coir seemed good. but now, hearing about the added lime and stuff to jiffy mix he MIGHT BE interested, seeing as ph is important. Only problem is, i told him that Jiffy mix has a bad rep. for contamns, at least thats what ive seen on here. hes now going to reconsider,
is jiffy safe? i dunno its kinda iffy. any suggestions?

I think no matter what you use you still have a contamination risk. Things to look for are a non-nutritive casing mix with minimal undecomposed plant matter. I have heard complaints using it, and success stories.

If your really concerned with casing contamination, go with strait verm. Second would be coir or coir/verm and third would be peat or peat/verm in terms of contamination potential (IMO). I dont know where jiffy mix would rank in that list as I don't know the exact ingredients...

To give is to live...

AFOAF just uses jiffy mix and is happy with it's simplicity. It's hard to say if casings contamed because of jiffy mix, but he doesn't think jiffy mix has been the source of any.
