Those look cube to me. The myc, the color of the cap and stem, the veil.  The gills are the only thing that look correct to me, but cubes can have that also.

They could be natal but I wouldn’t spread spores from those and say it was. Because of this issue with natalensis and cubes I would try again or source new spores until you get a tub that is obviously natalensis.

I’m out of town for a couple weeks but I can send a print when I get back if you want one.

I would appreciate that. I think they are cubes, I have 3 other tubs and they all look the same. I would love a print from somewhere I can trust the genetics. Thank you so much for the offer, feel free to send me a message whenever you can.

Yeah, that's the most reasonable take on it I believe. They were enough of a pain in the ass to source for me in europe, every vendor has P. Cubensis var Natal mislabelled as Natalensis

I get a bit too impulsive with my judgement and shit when I'm high on some stuff, although they don't look unlike nats to me still.

I guess there is one way to try to figure it out.

Tried for a month to work on a nat x playa cross, and just ended up with nat sneks that smell like garter snakes :unwanted:
Grown on pure moose poo, so that was a fun first after only doing cubes on it before.  Covering I used had an INCH gap on both sides and the temps never got over 70 for them so IDK  Gonna eat some tonight though...

First grow in about 11 years, and tried Natalensis but these got kind of weird.

Is this just genetic or can it be some kind of contamination?

I made a syringe from a print and inoculated 5 pf jars.
I replaced 1/3 of verm with rabbit manure.
And when it was ready i made some EZ dialed microtub with a cake and a little verm mixed with it and a 5mm layer of verm on the top.

I also made a shoebox and have several agarplates running, so I have a lot of genetic to play with.
But I have never grown anything looking like this before.

That’s super weird, I’ve never seen natal do this before.

I don’t see any contamination on the fruits, my guess is genetics but who knows it could be some weird myco virus or something

It smells just fine so maby just genetic.
But i have more genetic running from the same print so I will see if more grows turn out like this.

I know about unlatched, upside down lids for FAE, but my concern is whether or not that will be enough. I have never grown nats before at all, but a lot of this thread has talked about how nats need a LOT of FAE, far more than cubes, to try and limit overlay and get them to fruit properly. Will have to just give it a shot and see how it works out i think. Gave it a good break and shake a week or so before that pic, seemed to recover alright, a bit on the slow end though.

Really? That's a shame lol, would have been cool for testing different TEKs and doing experiments. I'd figured an LC would just be one single organism suspended in the liquid.

Second Flush Harvested and drying, amazing the difference in size of the fruits...

1st Flush

2nd Flush

Some really nice phenos popped up, took a few to clone/print for future work

Largest fruit in the tub so far came from this classic looking cluster, nice thick yellowish stems and slightly wavy caps when fully open:

Thinner more silvery white stems with heavily wavy caps:

And finally a gnarly looking stem and highly undulating cap that was lighter in color and had a faint green center spot instead of the typical orange-yellow:

I know I'm only on 31 pages into this thread. I do plan to read it all.
Did we ever figure out where this is in the family tree.

Does anyone know where to get natalensis spores in Europe? Trusted sponsors here either don't carry them/are out of stock or only ship to America. Thanks in advance!

IIRC it was found to be a genetically close relative to cubensis, like very close but still it's own distinct species.

Someone sent me a Psilocybe natalensis ITS sequence a few months back, so I had a pretty good idea what P. natalensis was - but it wasn't my sequence so I didn't want to share it.  This week I made a Psilocybe natalensis sequence in my lab, which matches the other P. natalensis sequence I have.  I've also uploaded it to Genbank, the first sequence of this species there.

The strain is Natal Super Strength.

Photos of the collection:  https://mushroomobserver.org/472561

Here is a tree I made which includes P. natalensis and related species, with P. allenii as an outgroup.

The Psilocybe cf. cubensis sequence is interesting - it's quite close to cubensis, and has some noise, but I don't think it's just a bad read of cubensis because it has some of the same nucleotide substitutions that Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata has.  Gaston Guzman collected it in Nepal in October of 2001.  Without studying the collection (it's in XAL) I can't tell if it's a new species or if it's something which hasn't been sequenced yet like Psilocybe pseudoaztecorum.

Other things you can see in this tree are that Penis Envy has the same ITS sequence as regular cubensis, Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata from the east coast is the same as it is on the west coast and Psilocybe thaiaerugineomaculans is the same as Psilocybe thaiduplicatocystidiata.

In case you'd like to experiment with making phylogenetic trees or analyze the natalensis sequence yourself, here's the FASTA file:  http://images.mushroomobserver.org/natalensis.fas

Here's what Alan posted. The tree is interesting

Crazy how the spores circulate up on top of the tallest fruit.
