Sterilize because there are no nutrients or proteins in a casing layer to destroy with the heat. However, total sterilization is often not necessary (but still a good idea) because the mycelium is mature by the time it is introduced.

If you are using coir,to name one,there is a slightly nutrative element that will contam a little more easily than straight verm. In this case pasteurization is a good option and should protect the casing better IMHO.

I don't bother doing either. I just open the bag moisten and case. My trays might not last as long as others but its worked good for me. I use straight verm though. Jiffy mix for me is instant green. I want to try coir though.

I just chuck the casing mix in a bowl, wet it and zap for 5 mins. Working so far.
