store bought or found hay...which is better?

i just bought some hay in the pet section of walmart. the bag says its timothy hay, but it seems "dirty" having various other kinds of sticks and fluffy grass-ends i had to pick out. i realized there is also straw that was laid down on grass seed outside my apartment. should i stick with the store bought, or just gather some of the hay outside? is there a difference, or is hay just hay?

timothy hay doesn't produce fruits as well as straw does.

go look for straw. it might be hard to come by since they're out of season, as i have found.
