Coco Coir vs Peat Moss
    #2873820 - 07/09/04 05:08 PM (19 years, 8 months ago)

I was wondering (besides saving the environment) what benifits coir has over peat moss. I've been thinking of using coir instead but its harder to find around here. I can order some but is it worth it? I guess the pH is more balanced too making it a bit easier without dealing with lime but anything else?

I do not agree in using coco coir, it seems to colonize way to much, and create overlay.

My friend had problems with that but after experimenting, he figured out how to cold shock it ,use the correct thickness of coir, and time it out so the flush occured just as the mycelium penetrated the surface. He got some impressive yields too but you do have to be careful of fast growth through coir.

^^ exactly, timing is everything. Peat will overlay just as well as coir will, although not nearly as thickly. I think a mixture of peat and coir would be beneficial for texture as it seems to make a bit more porus casing texture than peat. Peat typically mats down for me when watering and does not have the same "open texture" as coir. Peat is fine at application until you need to water, then it loses the desired texture...

Both work well on their own though. I have even used peat without buffering once and it worked fine, although I recommend adjusting the Ph, especially in large casings...

That is where I buy mine, one of the big chain stores (hint: you can take your pets inside). The main reasons why I switched from peat was because I had problems with contamination, and I was lazy (no adjusting the Ph).

No matter which you choose, I highly recommend mixing in vermiculite...

Just for fun, I like 1/1/1 mix of verm/coir/peat and a touch of oyster shell, you can get coir at most local pet stores, etc.

After working with coir more I have decided to change my mind on coir. I think one good thing about coir is that it does not need to have lime added to it. Coir, if used properly is great as casing.
