ARGH! grain is getting on my nerves!

I hate grain so far. WBS was a disaster. Millet isnt doing much better.
I loaded up 12 jars with whole millet a week ago. When i loaded them into the jars, they were loose and shakeable, with some exploded kernels from simmering. A week later, they did not germinate, and they also are now SLIMEY! i dont know what happened, but they dont shake very well now, and have turned a somewhat darker brown, as if its rotting almost, and now there is slime on the inside of the jars
Frustrating!
Im probably going to scrapp it all and go back to BRF cakes and try to case them....
And to those who think BRF doesnt make potent shrooms, youre nutz! I was totally impressed with BRF mushies

Contamination is your problem, not grain. Work on your sterile techniques and you should do fine. Don't blame it on grain, blame yourself. I have yet to use a substrate that produces mushrooms that are low in alkaloid content. Some say popcorn is no good for alkaloid production but I did not notice any difference. If there was any, it was miniscule...
P.S. - Try Rye once you hone your techniques, much better than WBS or millet IMO...

You didnt mention how you sterilized. Also, you may want to try soaking for 24 hours instead of simmering to germinate endospores. You also probably had too much water in your jars...not many kernels should burst before you PC because then they will get mushy and watery.

thanks, but that was the tek i used, only difference was i tried fractal sterilization. I guess it doesnt work?
I dont really think its contams... it just looks like the kernals are letting the water go and becoming soggy. I also forgot to mention that inside the incubator was exteremly humid, so much so that water was fallin ontop of the jars, which not all had tape on them. That couldnt have helped.
On the other hand, my 10 pint jars of millet, injected on monday (three days after the 1/2pint jars), seem just like the day i made them. No sign of germination yet but i know its early

Sour rot sucks, I simmer my WBS for 30 min then let it cool down and soak for 18 - 24 hrs. I haven't seen much sour rot since. Also, check out E-bay for a PC. I got a 22 qt presto for 36 bucks, can't beat that with a stick.

thanks for the replies. and yes, sour rot as i now know SUCS!
Well, its funny though, all 12 1/2pint jars failed miserably, they all went wet brown limpdick on me, but the 10 pint jars i made two days later with the same millet seem fine still. They almost seem too dry, if i tip the jar all the kernals tumble down like sand, no shaking necessary. And they dont smell nearly as bad, they smell just like when i made them, so hopefully they will catch, but no signs of germination yet after 6 days....

HEy! i have germination in one jar of millet now.... cool i hope theyll turn out OK. Its been a week now and no sign of sour rot, do you think ill be ok now?
I think the only real difference between the two batches was the pint jars were rinsed much more thuroughly, it seems to made all of the difference...
