Dear Captain Max,

I bought My spore rom PF. Just because they were sugested in MMGG, and a friend bought my first spores from them. The spores I am using are Hawaiian and Ecuador. Is there a supplier of spores that anyone would recomend, or a certain type of spore that is good?? Any info would be helpful.

Thank you
DaCrazyWolf

April 7, 2001

Today I am going to build a incubator for my jars.

Materials for incubator:

1. Large tupperware containter - 18"x12''x16''
2. Smaller container to fit inside the big one.
3. Heating pad.
4. Fish tank therometer.
5. Drill and bit.
6. 1/2" pvc with T-concectors

First i took the 1/2'' pvc and cut it to make an "I" shaped platform for the smaller container to sit on in the big container. i did this so I could get water circulation on the bottom. Next I drilled holes in the lid of the small and big containers to provide gass exchange for the jars. Then i put the fish-tank therometer on the out side of the big containter ( at jar level).

Next i filled the big container with water a some h2o2, and placed the small container in the water. The small container will float so i build another ''I'' shaped platfrom out of 1/2'' pvc to place on the lid of the small container, so when you place the lid on the big container it holds the small container in the water. ( fill with water 3'' below the top of the small container ). For the big container i used a see-through one, ( so i could see the water level ), but for the smaller container i use a solid cooler ( so light can't get into the jars )

Then I placed this incubator on top of a heating pad to keep it at 80-85 degr.

This incubator will hold up to 4 dozon jars. I just hope it will hold the temp rage i want. We will see tomarrow.

UPDATE!!!

The incubator setup is failing. It droped from 82 degres to 72 degres. I guess the heating pad dosen't work. So I will try a fish tank heater. I will keep you posted on any improvements.

Like everything else in life it is two sets foward and one step back. Any coments or sugestions would be helpful.

Thank you.

Hey wolf, good job so far. I would not recommend trying the fish tank heater, unless you use the alien tek (http://alientek.iwarp.com/shroomtek.html) incubator, which I cannot vouche for but might work. I tried using a fish heater in a water jar in a plastic containter with the jars, here is my post regarding that:

"My friend is using an aquarium heater to incrase temp in incubator. Incubator is 50cm x 40cm x 30cm (20" x 16" x 12") plastic container with 10 1/2pints (max capacity of incubator is 30 jars in 3 layers of 10 to give an idea of the volume). Aquarium heater is in water jar in middle. Heater (100 watt) has been running at max for 36hrs, the surface of the water jar is 100*f, but the air temp doesn't pass 75*f, which is only 5*f up from room temp. What is a better setup or a more effecient way of running this one (goal is 85*f)? thx."

What I have done since then is get a heating pad, which I have set on the low setting with the jars raised above it on a carboard box, the problem I am having with a heating pad is that it is TOO hot, it has Hi Med and Lo setting and even on Lo the temp is 100*f, on Hi it was in excess of 145*f!! So I have it on lo with jars raised, a temp sensor on a jar give temp of 80*f. The brand of heating pad is Sunbeam, the dimensions of which a almost identical to the borrom of my incubator. I don't know why your heating pad is so weak, i would suggest picking up a different brand as personally it is the best solution I have found and avoids the mess/water of aquarium heaters.

Keep us posted

Dear w3rmf3wd,

Thank you for your advise. The incubator set up Iam using is like Aliens Incubator. I chose not to use the fish tank heater to save some money, i already had the heating pad. The incubator temp is currently at 72 degres.the temp I am trying to reach is 80-85 degres. My set up has the smaller container ( witch holds the jars) surounded by water that regulates the temp. In Aliens incubator set up show the heater is in the very bottom submerged in the water. I have not been able to find a heater that can do that yet. I plan to look around tomarrow for something simular.

If anyone has experience with an incubator like this comments or sugestion would help.

Thank you for your help and support

IT'S ALIVE !!!! IT'S ALIVE !!!!

Today my jars are showing mycelial growth. It looks like little bright white fuzz. I realy think shaking the jars right after injecting the spores helps destributes the spores evenly around the jars. The fuzz is growing evenly around the bottom half of the jars, not just at the injection site. hopefuly this will help them coloinize faster.

More good news. The incubator is now in working order. with the help of a fish tank heater and a heating pad, the temp is currently holding at 82 degres.

The Gods must be smiling on me today.

Thank you for all your help and support.

Dear Thor,

Thank you very much for you comments and guidence.

To let everyone know I am planning to get some pic for you to see. I had recently lent my digital carmera to my little sister and now it dosen't work. I still love that little bugger anyway.
Right now there's not too much excitement but the terrium set up I am currently building is the Bomb. this unit will support 6 large terriums with one cool mist hummidifier. I'll for sure get some pic of that.

Thanks again for your help and support
