Need ID help... Caerulipes?
    #2871088 - 07/09/04 01:26 AM (13 years, 5 months ago)

My bro, his friend and I were on our way through some woods to a cliff for some jumping. We happened across what we thought seemed to be P. Caerulipes. I'll try to post all the info I can, but the only picture I can provide would be of a dehydrated one, as we already put them in the dehydrator... Let me know if I should do that anyway.

Habitat... Southeastern Tennessee... In the woods on a hill next to a lake, around wood on the ground. There were lots of fallen leaves and a few pine needles. The shrooms didn't grow in clusters, but many were close.

Gills... Brown--almost a cinnamon color. Not crowded, but thin, and some were broken. Some extended from the end of the cap to the stem, a few didn't. Slightly attached (?).

Measurements... Cap - 2-5 cm. Stem - 4-7 cm. (These are estimates)

Stem... Off-whitish, dirty white. Turned EXTREMELY (I mean, EXTREMELY) blue when handled or broken. The base was kinda blue in some spots. The inside of stem was sort of hollow, and sort of sinewy.

Cap... Brown, younger specimens were bell-shaped, matured ones were flat and wavy somewhat. Also bruised blue. The middle of the cap was a darker brown (but not too darker) than the rest. Also, they were wet and EXTREMELY sticky.

Spore Print Color... A perfect brown. (Although the spore-print was done in about an hour, don't know if that makes a diff...)

Bruising... Extremely blue.

Scent... Musty sweet (when dried). None I can tell when fresh.

UPDATE: Found only ONE specimen tonight after a short rain. This is a good representation of what most of them look like.

Notice the intense bluing in the stem and somewhat on the cap.

your description [except for the sporeprint color] sounds like a psilocybe.

be sure all of your details are accurate.

a picture of a dry specimen would not be of much help, but one of a fresh specimen showing the blueing reaction, one of the sporeprint, one of the mushroom in profile and one of teh gills illustrating attatchemnt and the rest would be of the utmost help.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Update on the scent of the mystery mushrooms... After dehydration, they have sort of a musty, sweet smell. It's subdued. They're stored in a jar and were put in a dehydrator.

On a side note, is it cool to feed mushrooms to dogs to test them out? Or can dogs absorb possible toxins and humans can't?

that is *not* a blue bruising reaction, that is violet. not a psilocybe. is the brown print color a reddish brown? i think you have some kind oc cortinariaceae. do not eat, some of these are deadly and i have verry little knowlege of the violet colored ones.

Iconcur with conrtefeet the stem is violet and his id is probably 99% correct and it looks like a Cortinarius species.

Check the phtos inthe Ultimate shroomery Guide under P. caerulipes.

They resemble P. cyanescens except the caps usually d not become wavy and they are less chestnut ccolored int he cap fading to straw color.
mj

The stems of P. caerulipes blu extremely. Most colections ahave been found in Michigan, Ohio and West Virgina where last year 80 people picking them were arrested in a single day.
