Slow Small Shrooms. Eh.. what's wrong?
    #2870865 - 07/09/04 12:42 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Hey. Found this post and pics on an anonymous BBS and wondered what you fungi farmers thought was the cause of this guy's small, slow-growing shrooms. Over-population? Genetics?

Quote:

These are Malabar from a spore syringe, on WBS, coir cased (about 6cm deep substrate, a little over 1cm coir) and patched. The myc colonized quickly and aggressively and pinned well 7 days after placing in the fruiting container. It's been 8 days since pinning and a few of the mush's are just now reaching maturity. Mush growth has been slow and small, with the largest only about 8cm tall. After the promising start, I expected faster growth and larger mushes. Not sure why they didn't turn out so well. Hope someone here has some ideas.

Backgound info...the fruiting container is about 60 x 45 x 45 cm, with plastic wrap sealed on top in the beginning, then left loose when growth started to slow. The casing was fanned 4-6 times per day, received 4+ hours light per day and misted only when the uncolonized coir on top looked less moist (roughly once or twice every other day). Since the humidity in the fruiting container always stayed 90%+ with drops on the sides, I decided to keep misting to a minimum.. just a light mist against the sides once a day or so. The temp remained at a constant 73-75F, both inside the fruiting container and outside. RH outside the container stayed about 55%. After fanning a few minutes, RH in the container dropped to about 70% but climbed back to 90%+ within 2 minutes of re-covering with plastic.

I dont understand, are you saying they were bigger the last time you grew them?

Well, I don't know anything about that (being as this isn't my grow), but 8 days for just a few shrooms to mature seems, er, kinda long. Couple that with the largest of these loompa's being, what, about 3"? Why wouldn't they be taller? Many of the pictures I see here have 1st flush shrooms that look to average about 5-6".

Then why are you even asking? They look just like all the other pictures to me. Why is 8 days too long? What would seem right to you? And what exactly is a loompa? lol

Those mushrooms look normal for the size of the container and the thickness of the substrate.

Why am I even asking? Because I want to know? Jesus, man, if you're trying to bust my balls, I have to compliment you on the excellent job you're doing

8 days seems long because everything else I've read would indicate that cubensis usually matures within 5 days. From the Shroomery FAQ:
Quote:

How long does it take for a pin to mature?

It takes anything from 2 - 5 days for a P.cubensis pin to mature.
This depends on the strain, substrate, humidity and temperature.

And "loompa," as in "oompa loompa," the vertically-challenged, orange-skinned folk from Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory.

Thanks, Domey. I'm curious, what makes you suspect humidity might have been on the lower side, since RH in the fruiting container stayed consistently above 90%?
