Solid advice, though I've been stuck 3x in the past week coming up this muddy snowy mountain, and using a come-along or mats wouldn't fit these scenarios

Having to get unstuck, and traverse a few meters of no traction ground on a hill to get somewhere clear and flattish

A shovel and a few cups of sand along the intended path / around the tires, worked easily enough

Really just depends on the scenario, but I'm all ears for more ways to manage these things, never even heard of using your floormatts, I'll remember that

I also live in the mountains, and tire chains ain't just for snow.  Sand would be functionally useless in the cadcades, the ground and moisture would just eat it.

I would also study climate change as certain places of the world are having dramatic changes in climate and its important to be adaptable in a ever-changing Earthly environment.

That is the exact reason I am leaving Oregon.  I thought a forestry degree would make me happy, instead I know too much.  Alaska it is.

Quote:

A change in our climate however is taking place very sensibly. Both heats and colds are become much more moderate within the memory even of the middle-aged. Snows are less frequent and less deep. They do not often lie, below the mountains, more than one, two or three days, and very rarely a week.

“The elderly inform me the earth used to be covered with snow about three months in every year. The rivers, which then seldom failed to freeze over in the course of the winter, scarcely ever do so now. This change has produced an unfortunate fluctuation between heat and cold, in the spring of the year, which is very fatal to fruits

~Thomas Jefferson
