Is my grain bag fully colonized and...
    #28691050 - 03/08/24 02:45 AM (10 months, 4 days ago)

Hi, all. So, this is the first time I have tried growing with a monotub (every other time has been PF Tek) and I have two questions that I would very much appreciate if I could get some answers/opinions for.

1.) Is this grain bag fully colonized?

2.) I recently noticed a small amount of contamination has started growing in the bag... If this bag is fully colonized, Can I pick the contaminated parts off and still be able to use the rest for the monotub or is the bag lost and I should toss it out and start over again?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

...But let's just say if it wasn't contaminated. Is that a fully colonized bag, I can't quite tell. It's solid like a "soft brick" (for lack of a better term), but it doesn't look as white/full of mycelium, like other people's I've seen.

In general that solid feel is often attributed to bacterial contamination but that is stereotypical.

Okay... So, it is NOT fully colonized. probably needed a couple more weeks, I'm guessing? Thanks again.

good that you've got the PF tek under your belt. i'm going to make an assumption. you inoculated that bag with a spore syringe? i would advise you to read the guide in my signature.

if you want to be certain it is fully colonized, shake the bag & mix the grain. wait a day and see how the mycelium recovers. when the bag/jar looks to be 100%, i wait another day or two to play it safe. uncolonized grains are ripe for contam.

I shook/broke up the bag at 20% colonization, like the instructions that came with this kit said... Also I used liquid culture that I grew myself (I have done this several times in the past), So i' guessing that, even taking all the necessary precautions (small flow hood i bought off of etsy, 91% isopropyl alcohol to wipe the injection port and needle, flaming the needle) to make sure that no contam happens. My liquid culture, I'm assuming, must have been contaminated even though it didn't look like it was (I'm my opinion). I don't think that the contam happened by going through the bag filter, but I don't know. Thank you for you reply.

It’s entirely possible the bag came contaminated too. That’s why pretty much everyone on here advocates making your own spawn so you have control over each step of the process. Not knocking you, I started with a kit too. I think they help lower the barrier of entry for some people.

Personally I’d let it go a while longer and see what happens before you toss it for good.

I have had bags that feel dense but that won't be an indicator if your spawn is healthy or not.
