Casing cakes in coir
    #28689853 - 03/07/24 10:49 AM (10 months, 5 days ago)

Hey, I saw an old thread about covering PF cakes in coir, as opposed to verm. I tried to search some info about it, but came up empty handed and couldn't quite find anything useful.

Should I expect increased risks of contam? Would I have a greater yield with the increased surface area as coir is "edible" to the fungus?

Thanks for input.

Why would you expect an increased risk of contam?

Verm and coir both work perfectly fine. Personally I prefer coir, but use what you have. Just make sure your fruiting conditions are good. The coir isn’t feeding your fruits, the brown rice flour is. And besides that, they’re 91-95% water. You only need to worry about making sure your hydration is on point.

I was expecting contam because it leaves uncolonized substrate, and I was under the impression coir has nutrients, but I've just realized it does not. Thanks for the reply.

Oh I gotcha. Yeah not a concern, otherwise no one would be able to grow bulk in tubs since that’s mostly coir by volume.

But yeah either coir or verm, whichever you have 👍

And just a heads up since it seems like you might be reading some older threads. Fruit those cakes inside a water tub instead of the old SGFC and you’ll have a lot easier time with moisture control

Thanks, the whole coir casing concept was from a thread about a water tub anyway! Wish I could still find it, was full of other interesting PF tek ideas.
