Hillbilly strain question
    #28684944 - 03/03/24 10:42 AM (3 months, 22 days ago)

Hey yall so I thought about this since I’m growing some right now and they are pinning. Since these are some fat mushrooms will side pins effect the grow? Like I don’t want it to side pin and then grow so fat that it pushes the substrate so much that it messed jr up. Normally I leave the side pins and let them grow but idk if hillbilly would be smart but idk never grown it.

I'd use a liner or compress the substrate (next time).  More info on the latter here.

I did compress it down but they still side pinned cuz the sub was a little dry but I’m asking if the mushroom being so fat will damage the sub for more flushes

These things are going to wreck your substrate! They're very difficult to remove, at least in my experience. They grow like broccoli or something. You almost have to cut them from the substrate. There's no twisting and pulling with Hillbilly.

So the side pins should I remove them before they mature?

If you’re getting side pins, you’re not compressing your sub properly. Being dry doesn’t matter. Getting fat and pushing don’t matter they will just flatten and push up or down. Shouldn’t make much of a difference to microclimate there.
Compressing your sub properly is paramount if you’re not using a liner, and few people do it flawlessly. It’s possible to get no side pins without a liner.

All I can tell you is go nuclear on compression. The sub will naturally spring back up but if you’re at proper FC and do it right, very few side pins. I have a few sometimes, that’s it.

Hillbilly is just a cube from Arkansas. It won't sidepin more than any other variety. Ideally you should aim to not have any sidepins but it won't "crush" your substrate if it does side pin... Unless they are giant fruits. In that case you should be happy.
