PF-Tek cakes: Multiple problems, please help
    #28684651 - 03/03/24 03:23 AM (3 months, 25 days ago)

Dear community,

my friend is pretty desperate, so I decided to help him out by making this post. He started his pf-tek adventure with Amazonas Cubensis at the end of December and at first it seemed to go ok, even though he colonized four jars a week later and maybe waited too long with birthing the jars that seemed fully colonized.

As this was his first attempt he was afraid to dunk and/or roll and wanted to see how it goes with just the cakes sitting in the box. His conditions were: around 26Β°C (heat mat), aquarium pump for humidity and FAE (he didn't open the lid often and didn't open the window for outside air), a 5000k light for 12 hours. Not much happened, a mushroom appeared here and there (on three cakes or so), but they never got any bigger than a few centimeters, nothing near to what he had expected.

After that, nothing happened for weeks so he decided to dunk the cakes. After that, it seemed that the cakes started pinning and he thought he had solved his problem, but the pins never developed any further and just turned blueish and dark. Meanwhile the cakes are turning orange and blue, but it doesn't look like contamination, we have no real idea what it is. Since one or two weeks, he decreased the temperature to around 23Β°C, started misting all day long, opens the lid and window multiple times a day and now he changed his light to a 6500k light and set it to 16 hours (since yesterday). Since about a week there is some foamy overlay appearing and when trying to remove it with a knife, a drop of disinfectant got on the mycelium, that can't be good, but he hopes that it doesn't kill the whole cake.

To be honest, I have no idea if his project has just failed, but he put in lots of money, time and due to a leak in his dunking container, he actually managed to destroy his floor while he was at it. Sure, he is noob, but I would like to help him.

Can this still be saved? We would highly appreciate any help with this!

My friend told me to tell you to tell your friend to follow the Updated PF-Tek by Ziran to a T and fruit the cakes in a water tub. My friend also said that air pumps and hygrometers are foolish to use for PF-Tek.......his words, not mine.

Updated PF-Tek Guide

I hope this will improve the situation.

Your current contraption is not providing good conditions, by the looks of it it's drying out the cakes. These cheap hygrometers are very misleading, you are better off to judge conditions with your eyes. You can try dunking and rolling the cakes again and fruiting them in a water tub. They might still produce but if these cakes are already several weeks old then it's probably better to start over.

Welcome to the shroomery

P.S.: If you want people around here to take you serious then drop the "my friend" narrative. It's not providing any protection.

So many things are wrong, i don't know how to start.

First and most severe mistake.

Follow the teks to a T. It doesn't make sense to skip important steps just because you are "afraid" of following a tek!

Quote:

heat mat, aquarium pump for humidity

Not needed and counter-productive. Heating mats promote bacterial growth. Heat the room and not the cakes.

Quote:

started misting all day long, opens the lid and window multiple times a day

Totally wrong. Dial in your FAE and mist less!

Thank you for your quick replies! Of course I want to cry now, but those tears won't make my cakes any less dry :P I followed the instructions of the vendor that seems to know what they are doing, but obviously I was mistaken.

The box with mat and pump, spores and substrate jars were really expensive (for me at least) so it's a bit hard for me to just throw all that away. I will try to dunk them again and follow your advise the best I can. I know that the hygrometer is a useless piece of junk, I don't really take it too seriously. I can't heat that room so I have think of another way.

Sorry to hear this. Keep the pump and heat mat. The pump might be coming in handy to build something like a JCM FC and the best use for those heat mats is to get rid of condensation on agar plate lids.

Thanks again! Maybe I can still use that stuff somehow, I will look into JCM chambers, I have no idea what that is. To be honest, I didn't want to make a big deal out of my growing attempt, about 14 years ago I just bought a colonized cake, put it in a box with heated water and two weeks later the mushrooms exploded. That was about it. So I thought buying this pro-kit would surely be even more amazing. Well...

Where do you guys buy vermiculite? I only find 100L bags and that seems a bit excessive to roll some cakes :P

For verm you can look in pet stores. It's used as a breeding ground for reptiles.
