endofungal bacteria?
    #28681391 - 02/29/24 03:04 PM (10 months, 12 days ago)

A paper on endofungal bacteria popped up in my feed today. Could this be why it seems impossible to clean up some cultures, at least without resorting to antibiotics?

Interesting. It sounds like they are saying that endofungal bacteria primarily affect molds (Mucoromycota): "Many EFBs are associated with the fungal phylum Mucoromycota, and belong to Betaproteobacteria (Burkholderia-related endobacteria, BREs) and Mollicutes (Mycoplasma-related endobacteria, MREs)..."

They also imply that it may be mutually beneficial: "The symbiotic relationship between EFBs and host fungi involves mutualistic benefits and occasional antagonism, impacting asexual and sexual reproduction of the host fungi..."

I did a little more digging and found Endofungal Bacteria Increase Fitness of their Host Fungi and Impact their Association with Crop Plants (Alabid et al., 2019). In this article, the authors describe endofungal bacteria that form relationships with basidiomycetes. They state: "Although the role of these bacteria is not fully understood, increasing evidence gathered by studying the model Sebacinalean fungus Piriformospora indica suggests that they contribute to the fitness of their fungal hosts..."

It would be interesting to see a study of endofungal bacteria in Psilocybe spp.

So it definitely looks as if endofungal bacteria are present in some mushrooms and they're beneficial, per this paper.

I was thinking that maybe endofungal bacteria could impact the morphology you see on a plate, maybe lead to sectoring?
