Multivitamins - Multi for Him vs Multi 1

Hello.
I accidentally bought Nature Made Multi. I was going to buy Multi for Him. After a short research I see that the iron in the Multi is not suitable for men since it exceeds daily limit intake. However seems like this is not a problem till you are 50.
Do you have any knowledge or experience about the issue?

There’s no harm to you in consuming more than the prescribed amount of iron. Within obvious limitations. You’ll just pass it out of your system. Old men have lower levels of iron in their bodies that can be amended with more of it available in their diet. That’s all it is. It’s just more of something you need when you’re older. It doesn’t have any bearing on where you are now.

Asante do you still you use that multi vitamin you recommended years ago?
I started taking them after that and think theyre quite amazing. you cant attribute ones health to one pill, and I do quite a bit as far as body maintenance regimens, but am glad to have added it. Feel like I never ever get sick, and when I do its over rather quickly.

i would but during covid there was a scacity so i settled for a "second best" brand and dug in for 3 years.
Its really amazing and i still highly endorse it.
A good high power multi truly helps.
Even a mere 100% multi like the supermarket brand multi are highly justifiable.
Your body is a complex chemical industrial complex and taking a multi each day assures that the key raw materials all are in good supply.

Well jeez... don't keep us in suspense guys! What's the freakin' name/brand of this allegedly otherworldly and glorious multivitamin you speak of?

I've used multivitamins on and off my entire life. Frankly, I don't notice any difference when I'm taking them versus when I'm not. I eat a variety of fresh prepared and whole foods in my diet and limit processed foods considerably, so I suspect I'm probably getting the bulk of whatever nutrients I need through diet. The idea of a multivitamin to help close any nutritional gaps makes intuitive sense to me, but in practice, I just don't have any anecdotal evidence to support their use personally. I still take 'em more often than not though. Specifically: This Costco Organic Multivitamin.

Be my guest
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/19974762#19974762
if you use 2 of these, one morning, one evening, for a few months, you will feel noticably better and if you quit them you sink back into ordinary health
one doesn't do it, it's a two-a-day.

Well I'll be damned, I have tried those! I probably saw your thread 9+ years ago on it and bought a bottle. Recognized it immediately when I saw the colorful astro-phenomenal label imagery.
Same story as the Costco vitamins I take though... they give me some psychological benefit with regard to the peace of mind that I might be filling some nutritional gaps, but I just haven't experienced any noticeable physical effects.
As you rightfully point out in the thread you linked, a properly balanced diet of healthy foods is the higher priority, and I have always practiced that truth.

Not to be a party pooper, but your body is 8 years older now
Your once-unnoticable Kirklands now might be noticable if you quit them. No point in doing that though. Good nutrition first and foremost but a multi is just too sensible not to take.
I'm also later in my healthspan as you are, an oft ignored metric until you are on the bad side of it.
The one i now take, which is less good, is 40plus by Bionutrition Health Products
Your Kirkland brand multi has a good composition, and your body has a better composition, age included, so it likely is enough.
Ince you go gray the autumn of your life starts and these things become more important.

https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/wellness-and-prevention/is-there-really-any-benefit-to-multivitamins
https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/why-are-you-taking-a-multivitamin-202207262787
The standard practice these days is doctors (ones that stay somewhat up to date) don't recommend multivitamins to anyone but the elderly or for specific conditions/deficiencies, dietary restrictions, medication side effects, prenatal etc. It used to be promoted for pretty much every adult to take a multi, but that's not the case anymore, except in the marketing paid for by vitamin sellers
Vitamins are a multi-billion dollar industry that offer the promise of cheap and effortless health improvement. If you actually read the research though, at best the bottle of vitamins you buy is one of the very small percent that actually contains what it says on the ingredients list and the only impact on your health is a positive placebo. At worst you are daily dosing yourself with unregulated mystery powder (even "third party tested brands") that may genuinely cause you harm in the long term.
I personally prefer my mystery powders to have a little more kick to them than vitamins can offer

My sincere apologies for not coming back to this sooner (P&MWB is not in my usual rotation of forums), but I am glad Asante got back to you with the information. Dude, I cannot believe that was 9 years ago now .
Totally get the reasoning for people who dont take a multi, either because they just dont feel different, or due to reported evidence stating its not necessary. Im not gonna refute any of it, but the vibe from my body tells me to keep taking these things, so I do. I take only one, at night and before bed. Though your recommendation of two is heard Asante (and I might give it a go), the current regimen seems to be well received by these old bones.
The only time I wont take this is when my wife and I have a few drinks. Those nights I instead opt for a full spectrum vitamin b supplement, specifically this one:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01787EPEE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
If one does not take a routine supplement, I would at least suggest taking one of these (or something similar) either a few hours before they drink, or at the end of a night of em. Objectively, I feel much better the next day taking one a few hours prior to drinks, rather than at the end. I remember reading somewhere long ago that alcohol can do a pretty good job of stripping certain vitamins from the body, and that over time, a consistent pattern of this can potentially lead to unwanted outcomes. As one who regularly enjoys to imbibe at home on the weekend, I try and stay mindful of practices that can mitigate any long term effects from the behavior. Fingers crossed, but so far so good

Men generally need less iron than women, and excessive iron intake can be harmful, especially in the long term. Maybe consult someone who knows that better, Canadian Pharmacy Partnership customer service for example. I would also do an extended blood test before, cause some things might be very harmful for us and trying to experiment with the health is not a good idea.

I think the multis I take are no iron ones, for this reason.
