How to handle substrate in between flushes. (Tubs only)

Hello all! I’m curious what everyone does with their “tub sub” in between flushes. All opinions and teks are welcomed. Except from anyone that uses UB Tek! Yeah I know, I’m a dick! I think using UB Tek is like saying irregardless and then arguing how it’s a word! So, moving on.
Personally, I rehydrate if necessary and add more coir to fill in the dead space at the edges. Then I add a thin top layer, spray it with water (till the coir turns black) and put it back into production. This works but I’m always looking for better options. So please if you don’t do UB Tek and have other options please share. Again, not being a dick but fak UB tek.
Sometimes, if rehydration isn’t necessary and I jack up the top of the sub with “potholes” I will simply flip it,fill the sides with coir, no top layer and wait for it to do it’s thing. When I do this I have found that sub with bottom fruits takes off much faster than subs that do not have bottom fruits. They typically always fruit but no bottom fruit tubs are much slower.
Recently I started using a razor knife to harvest my donkey dicks. Sometimes I leave the stumps, sometimes I rip em up and make gummies with them. I would like to know what everyone does to find out what’s more beneficial for future harvests as I’m not sure on either tek.
I would like to thank everyone in advance for your insights, thoughts and methods.

I run multiple shoeboxes at a time, usually staggered in different batches so that only a few are fruiting at any given time. I don't differentiate between different stages. I just check and rotate all of my fully colonized tubs at the same time- crack the lid, inspect, look for fruits to pick, and mist any dry spots on the surface. (Colonizong tubs are sitting just below the others on a bottom shelf, in the same basic conditions. I just leave them out of rotation for the first week or two.) If a substrate is really old and starting to shrink and form a dry crusty membrane, I might pick that bit off and mist a little more thoroughly. Once a sub starts shrinking and really drying, I'll typically do a light mist on all six sides of it. It's all sort of an autopilot type activity once a tub has been spawned. I usually run substrates out until they turn green with trich or just sort of crumble into a pile of coir at the slightest touch. If something looks iffy, but also like it might kick out a few random fruit, I'll try to make sure it's not drying out and then leave it to its own devices. I'll catch any fruits or trich that turn up in the process of cycling through all my tubs.
I also often take substrates out of the original tub and put them in a larger vessel. For a bunch of different reasons, chief among them being that I really don't give a shit, a lot of my tubs end up producing a fuck-ton of side pins. I'll typically get a nice surface canopy-ish type deal on my first flush, but after that there's often a bunch of immature fruits pushing against the walls. So I like to give those side-pins the space to fully develop. (It also frees up the original tub for the next round of spawning) Once a sub is in a larger tub and exposed to more air, misting all 6 sides (or at least the 5 exposed ones) becomes more routine. Still based on visual indicators of drying out though, and not some automatic formula.
I never replace coir. If anything, I rip away large chunks of it when I harvest. I actually find that inadvertently removing most of that top layer, and leaving a lunar surface of peaks and craters, seems to help an old sub rejuvenate and kick out new growth. Like the old beat-up surface myc is gone, and now the mature but still healthy myc that's been working below the surface has a chance to fuzz up and kick out some pins.
-------------------- Beware of advice- even this.

I rarely go for a second flush on cubes, if I do, I’ll just dump some water in there, never measure it or anything just whatever I feel like, throw the lid on and call it a day lol
