Confused Shrooms

Hello everyone I recently decided to help a friend in cultivating some golden teacher mushrooms. I should mention that I do not have any previous experience with cultivating mushrooms, but he explained most of the important stuff to me, so what could possibly go wrong. He decided to order like 10 of these boxes that come with a like a Ziploc bag. (Basically you fill the bottom of the bag with water, put the container with the substrate inside and stuff will grow) you guys know the drill. And for the most part this has been working quite well I'd say (I already have 120g of dried shrooms after a month) however there have been a few unforeseen problems.
First of all in some of the boxes the mushrooms seem to be confused in which direction to grow. Growing towards the side of the container most of the time or even straight down. My friend said this could be due to a lack of light. I previously used a simple light bulb, since then I upgraded so a 150w grow light to eliminate that possibility. Another thing I'm not too sure about is when to harvest. In most cases I wait until some of the shrooms caps are opening up, and go from dark brown to a more light brown color, but I think It's already too late. Some of the shrooms also seem to have developed some yellow spots on the stem, I hope this is fine.
Hope someone can tell me what to do about these problems

There are any number of teks and grow kits out there, so I don't know what specific one you're doing. If all conditions correctly emulate natural conditions, they're going to grow straight up and all be ready to harvest at about the same time. I don't think your setup is ideal for that, but it is working. They're probably getting light from all directions. Theyre going to fruit from wherever they recieve light and in whatever direction its coming from. You want to harvest when the veil breaks. If they are rotting, I'd assume they're waterlogged, the humidity is too high, and they need some fresh air exchange.

That's not true, we know that light does not cause pinning and as such the mushrooms won't grow wherever there's light.
This was debunked many years ago when folks taped up their tubs or painted their tubs black for no reason.

Doesn´t matter what kind of growkit, in the end they´re all the same: Instructions from 1864 and way too expensive. How often do you open the bag to give some air exchange? Very important, as the filter patches on the bags just give some gas exchange. Poking holes to the bag fixes that, so there´s no need to open the bag several times a day to destroy microclimate.
Another pretty "high quality" instruction is to pour water to the bag, to have it standing there with zero airflow, a nice playground for bacteria and other nasties. Hope you don´t use heating mats also.
Some ambient light is enough, for direct lighting 5500K and above.
Your shrooms are usually safe, unless they smell like trash or are slimy/squishy. If you´re worried make a pic at harvest and post there.

Thanks for the replies guys, I guess I should have been a bit more specific on how exactly I took care of the mushrooms. Once I got the grow kits I filled the bags with like half a cup of distilled water and put the boxes in my tent. Every evening I open the bags for like 10 minutes and close them up again for ventilation. Been really careful with handling the bags tho, using face mask, gloves, disinfectant and so on when touching them in any ways. After like 2-3 weeks or so I got my first results, most of the shrooms growing near the sides of the box tho. After harvesting the first "flush" I was instructed to dump out the distilled water from the bag, fill up the box with clean water and put it in the fridge for like 8 hours. Also here are some not so healthy looking shrooms i harvested like 2 days ago. Basically letting the cake soak for a bit. After like 8 hours, I poured out all the excess water from the box and put them back in my tent. I'm probably going to try poking some holes in the bag and see if it helps. Also, here are some not so healthy looking shrooms I harvested like 2 days ago.

What makes you think they don't look healthy? They got a little spore dump, looks good so far.

I thought the stems don't look as white as they should, but I'm glad to hear that they seem to be fine

Those side pins are always going to do what they want to do no matter which direction the light comes from. I use natural light and have noticed my top fruits do bend towards the light once they get top heavy and the light is slightly insufficient (like if I go out of town and the blinds are closed for a few day). Lanky strains do it more than the donkey dicks.
I’m not exactly sure how the kits come but if you can compress the shit out of your sub in the container before you put it into the bag that will help with side pinning. It will slow your growth down a little bit but will definitely help. Do you by any chance know the spawn to sub ratio? Lower ratios I.e. 1:1 or 2:1 tend to still side pin even with compressed sub.
All in all your project looks good! Nice job!

These kits are mostly fully colonized when they´re sent out. I wouldn´t handle the substrate with compressing or else, you´d disturb the network that is supposed to fruit soon. They´re produced in massive bulk, so they may sit on a shelf for several months, waiting for a customer. Food gets eaten meanwhile, substrate shrinks, bad manuals... All this is perfect to get sidepins. They ain´t bad at all, just harvest off the top and flip the cake over to harvest sides and bottom.
We can talk endlessly about growkits and their disadvantages, but for now it´s enough to know about. Growkits mean just pouring water and picking shrooms. Waiting in the meantime

Ah I see. I didn’t know they were already in spawn when shipped. You are 100% correct Goat! OP Disregard my comment about compressing the sub.

Just to add information to the light debate:
I put my monos on a table underneath my window. The window doesn't ever get direct sunlight, and the shades are always down. It gets light enough to read without a light during the day, but just barely. My mushrooms grow just fine straight up.
