Multi spore growth causing mutants?
    #28670331 - 02/21/24 07:54 PM (4 months, 3 days ago)

There's a post from years ago about this but no real confirmation. I've got a bin full of what are apparently mutants. I'd like to confirm what causes them and if pulling them and waiting for a second flush will bring better fruits. Should I take tissue samples and/or spore prints? Below is the original post I started.

Someone told me my PE strain didn't look right. This is my first bin of bulk. Everything appeared to be healthy during the spawning and has colonized healthy. So why don't these look like the pictures elsewhere? These seem off colored and have spots. They took quite a while to colonize and start fruiting.

Went spore to grain bag. I didn't know better back 6+ months ago when this started. Took about 4-5 months to fully colonize and go to bulk.

Fruiting bin inside a fruiting chamber/tent.
Clean are flowing into the bin every 6 hours along with the tent being properly ventilated with intake/outtake fans every 20 mins
Humidity around 85%
70 degrees
Substrate is CVG

With spores to grains and colonization for 4-5 months
it´s just a miracle to see something growing besides contaminations.
If you get a second flush,
there´ll most likely be regular fruits.
If you take clones (tissue sample) from this you plan to grow blobs with rosecomb mutation.
You also won´t have spore prints if it´s PE, they don´t release on their own.
Have a look here for conditions.

Fruits are safe when dehydrated.
Don´t get nervous when shrooms don´t look like you know from other´s grows.
They´re nature.
We don´t eliminate girls if they don´t look like Paris Hilton, do we? :whistling::lol:

True that. Ok that’s all helpful. Yeah. Basically, I inoculated 4lb bags like I was making half pint cakes because of the MW grow kit I bought. Didn’t know about agar and expanding spores and isolating growth. Took months even for my blue and pink oysters to colonize because I used suck a small amount. I’m guessing the mycelium was pretty tired. Most of the bags I’ve inoculated have contaminated. So here’s a lucky one. Would you recommend soaking this cake after the first flush? It’s shrinking and I didn’t use a liner. I’m learning. Thanks for the response.

For rehydration i just mist heavily and let absorb.
Repeat until pooling remains (no absorbing anymore),
pour off/dab up excessive moisture and done.
Formerly i dunked but i got it waterlogged sometimes, so i stopped that.
But that´s personal preference, you can dunk of course.
But as you don´t have a liner, you better mist

yeah 4-5 months is absolutely bonkers. since you injected spores to grain directly, your bin is likely heavily bacterial which might be causing the mutants. cubensis responds to environmental factors all kinds of ways. bacterial infection can absolutely cause weird shit like that. but yeah you definitely will want to start over and use clean culture going to bulk rather than spores.

Yeah it’s misleading when you start from a kit without all the answers to going big so soon after your first grow. But I’m gettin there. Got all the stuff months later. Just need to get my agar perfected and cycling. I’m so damn close. Thank the stars for YouTube University and places like the Shroomery.

Are you saying I can't take tissue samples from these because they'll be mutants? I need to take samples from proper fruits to get further proper growth? I'm about to read that link you sent but in case it doesn't have spore info, can you recommend where I can find info on that? Here's how the first flush turned out.

You can clone everything you want.
With cloning a fruit you narrow down the gen pool informations (from multispore),
so if you clone mutative/damaged genetics you possibly get a tub full of them.
I really wouldn´t think about cloning fruits from a bag been 5 months colonizing.
Your best bet would be swabbing them, as you won´t get spore prints from regular PE.
You already made some agar yet or have a still air box?

I have both agar and a SAB! Can you help me understand how to swab the spores? Makes sense about the clones. I was reading on them and I'll be looking for better genetics.

I've had far better success with my SAB than my DIY flow hood so I'm sticking to the box for now.

Know about swabs?
You rub between the gills of the cap to collect spores.
Now you can streak them on agar for germination.
You could sterilize some q-tips, but sterile swabs
ain't expensive, and q-tips are a bit short.

You need to catch the right time to collect,
but as PE doesn't make a spore mess on their own,
you can let them mature until you can see the coloured gills.

Thanks for that information. I did notice some dusty gills on the first batch of dried fruit. The ones that looked more normal. Do you think mutated fruit produces mutated spore genes? I think I’ll sterilize some q-tips until I order some swabs.
