wind generator: how to-
    #2867761 - 07/08/04 06:37 AM (13 years, 3 months ago)

a link i found while searching on how to build an alternator for a windmill generator:

http://homepages.enterprise.net/hugh0piggott/nirvana/index.htm

i am very interested on how to build my own wind generator after seeing how expensive they are to buy outright.

Well, I just spent 20 minutes trying to find a picture and description of what I was talking about but had no luck. You could go and pick up this months issue of Popular Mechanics though to see it.

In it they have a short piece about Windaus Turbines of Ontario and their vertical windmill design.

The best way I can think to describe it, which is pretty accurate now that I think about it, is to imagine the blades from an old-timey lawn mower that was powered by pushing it. Then just turn it vertically and you have it. It has an extremely small footprint and is more effecient than a normal horizontal, bladed type. A 100 ft tall model generated 5000 kw/hour in a 12 mph wind. It also works no matter which direction the wind comes from. And they are considerably quieter. If you live in an area of high wind, I would venture it is also much more capable of windstanding loads that would destroy a conventional one.

Have you considered trying to salvage an old generator/alternator and rebuilding it? Also, with this design, making your own blades would be MUCH easier as they don't rely on lift, only drag. You could basically take 3 pieces of pipe arranged vertically in a triangular configuration for the frame. You'd probably brace it at the top and bottom with a Y shaped piece that would also serve as the support for your blades axle. The blades could be made of aluminum sheet metal that has been twisted and secured with a similar Y piece mounted to the axle.

I hope that can give a clear picture of what I'm trying to say.

I can't see why you'd want to build your own generator for a serious windmill..
Just use an old washing machine motor or car alternator, depending on what output you're aiming for
Power output increases with the cube of the wind velocity, a huge incentive to find faster wind. Wind velocity increases with height.

1/2 * rho * v^3, if I remember my physics... (rho = density of air, about 1.2 kg/L^3)

I live in arizona.  When we do get wind, its a single gust at 25723487954mph then nothing. :frown:

Find me a build your own solar panel setup thing :frown:

Start at nrel dot gov... (national renewable energy lab) They have lots of good info... Also, aerl makes some of the best MMPTs (maximum power point trackers) available... Another good site is http://www.windsun.com/
