I harvested some nats and some allegedly malabar but it doesn't look like some of the pics I've seen.
It was oat spawn to coir that I thought was 5:1 but used too much H2O I guess so added verm to make it right.
Left the led on for too long I guess, super fuzzy feet...but also all had small caps and long stems, the malabar just slightly meatier.
Is this all FAE related?
Is there a post that shows different problems we encounter and what causes them? I like to read the info not just ask for advice.
Dank you

Edit: can you not rep someone twice within a certain time? Just wondering tried to rep someone and it was wanting me to edit a previous one....

Most likely not enough fae, nats need more than average, no idea about the last question.

Not green but yellow in areas.  That happened when I left the mister on for 6-8hr (lesson learned) and there was standing water.
That was my thought too regarding the crack but I mist it 3 x’s a day paying extra attention to the crack. A friend thinks I did it from not supporting the container when I was pulling/picking it up from a shelf I had it on.
Between this being my first run and nearly drowning it I was excited it even pinned.  I’ve been able to answer most of my questions here but stumped on this…. or maybe there is no clear cut answer.  Just curious on any thoughts or feedback.

Brought them out of the closet to get them closer to ideal heat and humidity conditions, any ideas or advice would be appreciated.

2,3, and 4 are all definitely mold. The first one likely is too but I'm not 100% on that one yet.

How did you inoculate them?

Time for education again.  I see the mold.  My first thought, though, when looking at those pictures, was "bacterial".  Why?  Because I recently had a spate of bacterial bags and my PTSD therefore recognises Bacillus where it is and where it isn't.  The Cult pointed me to Spitball's tek so I don't make my grain too wet again.  I've got some jars on the way, so let's see how that worked.  But: are these bags just wet, or also bacterial?  How do you tell the difference?  I've gone through the "how to identify contam" threads again, and I don't see how to differentiate.  Look at the back of "2", for example.  I see mushy, gooey, wet grain sticking to the side of the bag. Bacterial.

hillbillybred, maybe we both learn together?

How do you gauge your grain before you load the bags?

When put on some toilet paper they should tumble off with only 1 or 2 sticking when you lift the edge up.

Yup, that's what I do.  I'm hoping my next batch is perfect.  The myc is growing well.

My question is identifying the difference between a bacterial bag and a "wet" bag.  Actually, it doesn't matter practically, either gets chucked.  So I guess, not useful to differentiate.

It can be difficult especially when there isn't any obvious discolortion but basically when the bag is bacterial the grains begin to "look sour" which i know sounds weird as "sour" describes taste and smell but you can tell something is interacting with the grain. In a bag that's just wet the uncolonized grains will look preserved but the mycelium just won't reach them because of pooling water blocking them.

You look at enough bags and jars and you'll just develope an eye for it.

Hi everyone, new to this type of stuff. I lost a few grain jars to contamination now I only have one left remaining, which is growing well.

The Mason jar size is 32 OZ. I was originally gonna use a monotub but I don’t have enough grain spawn for that. So now I’m going with a shoebox. I will be going with a 6qt Shoebox. My question is this fine? Will the 6qt shoebox be a good size for my mason jar + substrate? Thank you for your time

Like on the outside of the cap?

Or do you mean filling up the inside of the cap with alcohol and storing the needle that way?

First is no, second is maybe and wholey unnecessary.

I am just misting the cap and the syringe tip. I then let them dry. I use a new cap and needle after each use. My concern was that the alcohol would leach into the syringe somehow.

Why are you misting the cap and syringe tip anyway?
The flame is there for a reason.

I am going to run some modified lids for the first time thru the PC—they are plastic with a small hole on top and an SFD attached over the whole.

Should I tighten the lids all the way? I think so, given that there’s a whole on top for exchange. Thanks you!

I only mist the cap and syringe tip after using it. Then I put it back into storage. Trying to keep things as sterile as possible. I spray alcohol on everything. Even on myself. I spray alcohol on everything inside my SAB. I spray the outside, and spray myself. I also spray a light mist around my room. I clean until I think it's enough. Then I clean more. So far I've had no contamination's. The only problem I've had was what I believe was a bad LC syringe. I go batshit crazy on trying to create a sterile environment. I do wonder if raising the humidity in the room might help with dust and other potential contaminants. Does anybody know if raising the humidity helps with airborne contaminants?

My theory was that the moisture in the air (by spraying water/alcohol) would cause the dust, and other contaminants to fall out of the air. Therefore reducing the potential of small air currents introducing contaminants. No matter how careful a person is the slightest body movement will produce an air current. That's just my thoughts on that. I may be completely wrong though. It is known happen quite frequently.

No need to exaggerate. We use a SAB for a reason. In my first grow I used alcohol, in my next two attempts, I used none. I only spray the inside of the SAB with diluted soapy water and that's it. I don't even wear gloves anymore, but I do wear a mask, to avoid air currents. You cannot sterilise anything with alcohol, just sanitize, and you definitely cannot sanitize your whole room, nor is it necessary. As was said already, that's what the flame is for.

Another quick q about grain prep. My PC holds 6qt jars and I am planning to prep 12. Can I hydrate my oats, put them in jars, and then wait 1-2 days to PC? Or will that cause some issues?
