Has been 10 yrs since I have done any cultivation. I used coconut coir/vermiculite with fantastic results. Any thin new and improved?

That is not a casing. That is what you put your spawn into to grow mushrooms. Casings would be something like Pete Moss, that you put a very thin layer on top of your substrate.
Long road ahead of you all the info you need is on this forum

There's also no best.  There's a good casing recipe that works for a lot of actives (50/50 peat/verm, ph adjusted and properly pasteurized).  But best is going to depend on environmental conditions and species too.

For example, the casing typically used on the shroomery is a hack of Agaricus casings which fruit in lower temperatures than cubes.  Cultivators used verm in the mix to help hold more moisture and allow the cubes something to partially colonize into to mimic CACing done in commercial production.  Recently, several of us are noticing that one species of exotics doesn't seem to colonize this casing well, so I'm looking back at Agaricus methods and research so that maybe we can find something better.

In other words, best is relative to what you're growing and where you're growing it.  As well as what methods and materials you have available and how much work you want to put in.

Top dressing can be helpful though for cubes and requires a minimum of work compared to casing them.  So casing isn't very popular as the effort to get the 'best' results could be spent doing other projects and the gains don't generally justify the time or material cost.
