you can fill a syringe with water, and inject strategically in key locations of the casing..being careful not to harm any primordia

my foaf has spent many a long night picking at a casing for fear of leaving rotting pins behind

hmm well.. I'd just let them grow and see what happens.. if this is the first flush I don't see why the substrate would be dry. If they don't show any growth in 12 hours or start to show signs of aborting then I'd start plucking and patch the casing.
In general if you want bigger fruits make a thicker substrate layer and make the casing 1"

yes you can lightly mist them.. spray with a very fine mist just to get the casing moist.. dont overwater.. and you can do it again in a few hours
if the casing is really dry, your best bet is to inject some water + h202 wherever you can find a spot

AFOAF didn't do casings for long before switching to bulk, but sometimes strains that would do well grown different ways would just have small, terrible flushes for no obvious reason. Some strains would actually do 10x better on rice cakes than popcorn cased.

This doesn't seem to be a problem with bulk, and this is one reason AFOAF sticks with bulk with his grains now, even if it's a large amount of spawn for the total amount.
