I give you the lowly heating pad. Great for clearing up condensation for better plate photos.

Yup my lab is not near my coffee maker so the pad is convenient for clearing plate condensation. Next time I won't pour so hot and won't have to fool with either.

Don't worry Yahra, not for germination or speeding anything up.

How is the clarity? My cheap plates have pretty terrible glass, need to bookmark an upgrade option.

I can see through but I've not had a chance to put them into action yet. I did a batch of agar and they are sitting in my sab. I'll do some transfers tomorrow and let you know how they performed

The clarity is amazing, it’s wrapping them that sucks, Saran Wrap is my usual go to but that didn’t work, so I used parafilm. Well a week later I noticed the parafilm drying out and cracking  And my plates already had contaminated 🤦‍♂️ needless to say, I threw them all out. Don’t let me stir you wrong though. Some people really love glass petris! I’ve tried PP as well and much prefer PP over glass regardless of the clarity. Overall, I’ve decided disposable is what’s best for me. At $100 per 500 of nice, dense, grip ring plates, can’t go wrong.

I have some of those stoneylab and similar labasics branded 75mm dishes. Some fit better than others but all are usable. Clarity is fine, a few have a little waviness but not too bad. I've been putting them in small zipper bags, 2 or 3 per braggy fit well.

Anyone try one of those super cheap olive-stuffers as an agar punch?

That's a pretty novel idea... If it hasn't been done already, write up a TEK.

No need to use them at 90 degrees from the plate otherwise the wedge won’t come out of the plate

Size queen

There are also biopsy punches but I think the metal ends may be too short to flame. I've seen them come as single use, but waste like that makes me feel dickish.

In my mind, this all stems kinda from the Josex poke method a while back - just no PC cycle. D3_Myc suggests using those leather hole punches, but they come with a bunch of mineral oil and don't have a way to grip without burning yourself.

Anyway - maybe I'll just grab one and report back.
