Are these safe to eat?

6qt shoe box of PE started 2/1 from agar to grains. The lower right seems to have a greenish/blueish/grayish layer of some sort. It could just be bruising I guess... it can be removed, it's inside the mushrooms:

The mold is already sporulating. I would not eat any of them.

Okay, glad I asked, even though it's not the answer I wanted. I guess if you'd be kind enough, I have two more questions:
1. Does mold infect the inside tissue of the mushroom? 2. How do I avoid this in the future? My guess is that it was airborne and started after the shoe boxes were started. I pasteurized the coir, and the spawn looked clean to me...
Thank you.

I wouldnโt even want to open the lid on that for risk of spreading it everywhere.

I had it in a larger water tub with 2 other shoe boxes, all with open lids inside the water tub. The others don't show signs of mold...

I am not an expert and i can't tell which kind of mold that is, but there are molds that eat mushrooms, indeed. Trichoderma for example.
Most problems with molds are due to unclean spawn.

if your other tubs are still healthy you're going to want to keep a close eye on them. that picture gives me the willies.
i will answer your 2 previous questions:
- 1. Does mold infect the inside of mushroom tissue? No expert, but i'm almost certain it can. However, if you have access to agar, you might be able to take some clones from the healthiest looking ones.
- 2. How do i avoid this in the future? obtain clean spawn. how does one do that? start with agar. take transfers until someone here says "send that shit to grain". EVEN STILL, people lose tubs to contams. focus on clean spawn; far fewer gambles needed to reach a harvest.

Eh, harvest a few from the top left opposite corner of the tub so you can get your trip and dehydrate them on high to pasteurize them. As long as you use them for tea that should be fine but I wouldn't consume any with too much visible mold on them.
Then again you think starving peasants would throw away their cheese just because of a little mold? People in the old days used to eat mold all the time.
They also died before the age of 25 not wholey unrelated to issues of food safety so weigh that one in your head with your best judgement.
