Coco Coir Substitutes?
    #28670092 - 02/21/24 05:38 PM (10 months, 20 days ago)

I live in butte montana and getting vermiculite was already hard. There is only safeway and walmart in the entire city and in all directions for 1 hour.

Is there anything else I can use other than coco coir? I used to use it and have been growing since 2016 but am in need of a good sub. any thoughts? Thanks boys.

Coir is perfect for cultivation. There is no other sub that matches its perfection.

How about ordering it online?

Petco sells coir in the reptile section.

If you can manage to find them, straw pellets are just as easy as coir from a preparation point of view. Just hydrate them and spawn. They are already pasteurized and filled with thermophile bacteria because of the pelletization process, so they don't contaminate. They basically start fermenting by themselves from the moment you hydrate them, and that doesn't hinder mycelium in the slightest way.

In theory, they're also much more nutrient than coir, but that doesn't matter if you're going to use the standard spawn ratios used for cubes.
