How long was that time lapse? Haven't had any of my grafts flower and they're the same size as that

This cactus...
 Currently looks like this...
 It flowers now!
This one had a fungal problem and basically stopped growing for awhile. I think it might be cresting from the damage?

Some seedlings that probably should have been transplanted already. It is cool how they kind of look like a miniature version of some of the wild habitat cluster pictures I've seen.

This mom flowers a lot.

Damn, that does look like it's cresting, so lucky. I read somewhere once that infections are a common cause of cresting, but I have no idea why. Genetic code is edited maybe?
I was getting envious of everyone's flowers so went to check on my cacti and it looks like one of my grafted lophs is getting ready to flower. There is a long tuft of hair coming out of the apical meristem that looks just like pics I've seen of flowering. Funnily enough it's on one I suspect of being a fricii, but I'm happy because this will let me know definitively.

I can't remember who made that gif but it was made by the person who grew it out. I think that is a year time-lapse.
Edit: it Was Mostly_Harmless in the 2012/2013 Grafting Competition

I watched a youtube cactus video where the guy was saying people will take a hot nail and burn the center of a cactus, which terminates normal growth and often causes cresting. I'm not sure if the fungal infection messes with the genes, or it's just the damage that can lead to cresting. I'm curious to see what ends up happening with that one.
You are right, once there's fluff coming out of the center, flowers are soon to follow. Congrats!

Hey what's up hummingbird! Yeah that is my experience too, specifically that damage to that meristem tissue (the newest, usually center-most part of the cactus) results in a response. For me the response is usually pupping rather than cresting but I'm sure both can happen. What always does happen though is that the cactus refocuses its effort into something other than the damaged "new" tissue and redirects that effort.

I think I might try that hot nail technique on a couple of mine, would love to have some crests and would also like to test that method

Hey Mycoplex! That's been my personal experience too actually. I couldn't find the video I saw awhile back when I looked up the hot nail technique. All the people doing it were talking about using it to cause pupping. So you might get lucky and get a crest, but are more likely to get pups from it.
I honestly couldn't bring myself to burn my cactus with a hot nail or drill the center or whatever, but it's an interesting approach that people definitely use.
The top pic in my post up a little was one that had pest damage to the meristem, and one new pup grew out of the center and kind of ate the lower portion as it grew. Now it just looks normal.
What's weird is the damage to the one that looks like it might crest was off to one side more. When it started growing again, it grew all the way around until it got to the damaged side. Then it started growing up instead of out and looking more like a zipper.

Oh ok, that makes sense that using the nail to destroy the apical meristem would cause pupping. I guess that reinforces the idea that infections cause mutations. I wonder if I could purposefully infect some lophs to see what happens. I wonder what I would infect them with and how

Man that is an enviable collection. Looks like you got a crest going. Is that what happened? Was it damage? I hear it induces cresting

Hey Ferrel, thanks! That's a really nice pelecyphora. Looks almost like it has shark teeth armor. Is that a three rib astrophytum seedling below that one?
Yeah, the crest looking one got damage that looked a lot like the middle one in the top right pic. It stopped growing for awhile then went crazy.
