I think thatโ€™s a great idea.
Keep propagating on and on.

Saying thank you to anything you harvest wild or cultivated, is always the right thing to do in my experience.

My first few years into this hobby, I wasn't harvesting my plants to use. I did buy other growers cuttings a couple times to use with mixed results. I mostly wanted to let mine grow so things could be more sustainable. Now I'm to the point where I've been selling and gifting some out because I don't have the space to properly care for all of them, and have a decent amount set aside for medicinal purposes.

I feel like the plants you grow will give you the best experiences. That's because of the relationship you develop with them over time, it's like the love you put in comes right back. That being said, it's never easy to cut beautiful plants...I still wince a little every time. I do mentally tell the plants they will be propagated to help their long term survival, and/or that they will benefit me or other humans...and very likely make them more interested/in tune with the cactus. Which in the end also benefits their long term survival.

Think you guys got it all spot on.
I feel that all plants have spirits and can be communicated with by the right kind of person/mindstate.

If you think about it, the main driving force of any life form is reproduction.
So if you ask for help from a plant, be it food or medicine or spiritual , I think it best to help the plant reproduce.

I gotta say that I love this place for that. Such generosity here!

More to cut means more to plant

Its good to preserve genetics and propagate more.  I also like to plant the tips and brew the mid cuts.  Just seems like the natural thing to do.

I can't encourage all of you enough to just keep planting more and more.  All the hard work is up front.  All the expenses and searching.  Its just a matter of time before you have a great abundance.  5 years from now sounds so far away.  But its amazing how fast those few years pass.  Then its abundance for the rest of your life.  No stress over what to harvest.  More than enough for you and for those you want to share with.  Whatever falls over.  Whatever starts to lean.  Cut it and plant it.  Keep planting more.

Then you will have so much.  Whatever leans or breaks or falls.  It will be so much.  You will have a forest.  Keep spreading the cactus.

I love this advice.  I have 7 plants, and I plan to buy a few more this spring.

Dang, I should have written that down. Sometime in November I think? Maybe later? Got the seeds at the end of October.

I need to move somewhere warmer, itโ€™s a lot of extra work moving these pots in and out every winter.. I canโ€™t wait to have mine in the ground so I can feel a little bit more care free about them

I agree.  I just bought some seeds so I can increase what I've got but it's going to be a lot of work when they grow up.

I put mine under grow lights this winter.  They grew a lot but it's thin.  I think I'll harvest the thin parts a couple weeks before I move them outside.  See if real sun can lead to some more substantial growth.

Yeah I thought about bringing mine in as it gets kinda cold where Iโ€™m at. I put them in a cheap llittle greenhouse and itโ€™s staying about 10 degrees warmer than outside. I only had to bring them in for about 10 days when it got into the teens for the low. They are back out now and enjoying this warm front. Hopefully it stays warm and I can start watering them again soon. Itโ€™s really a bitch to move a 4 or 5โ€™ tall cactus in a pot in and out of a tiny plastic greenhouse lol. Thankfully I only have a couple of those to move. The others are mostly still under 2โ€™.

What's the coldest winter a bridgesii can survive outside? If it was consistently 40f at night but never froze, would that be enough to kill them?

I had a friend who planted two bridgesiis I had given him in his cactus garden. They had done very well in the summer, but unfortunately in the winters they froze. It got below freezing there. But now I'm in a place with milder winters, and I'm wondering if it could survive it. Also, what would be a sign to bring in the plant before things get worse?

I thought I read they could suevive very mild frosts.  But I don't know enough to suggest it.

40f at night is definitely safe for bridgesii. Low 20s/teens for more than a couple hours at night is when you risk death by freezing IME.

I've only lost cactus to cold once. It got down to 15 and there was wind chill that night. I'm not sure why I didn't bring them inside, luckily I only lost a few. I grow in pots in a greenhouse that doesn't keep much heat on cold nights...but would have definitely lost more without it. Dry soil in containers can make them a little more cold resistant, I'm not sure how that all works out for in ground plants.

If day time temps are consistently below 50f, and/or it's getting into the mid 20s consistently at night...That's about when I bring all mine inside now.
