Weird Marshmallow/blob looking mycelium on PF cakes
    #28670776 - 02/22/24 03:08 AM (10 months, 19 days ago)

Sorry if I'm bothering anyone by opening this thread but using the search function for this left me rather confused.

After spawning my PF cakes (GT and Escondido strains, dunked and rolled in hydrated coco coir) this weird dense / marshmallowy / "blob"-like mycelium (?) started growing quickly:

What is this and what should I do about it?

Searching through some older threads I found a wide variety of opinions: genetic mutation but still active (blobs), a reaction to hidden contamination, too much water in the casing layer, too little water, too little FAE, so I'm kind of at loss here.

Some more info:

Strains are GT and Escondidon not PE; it happens on all of the cakes. The cakes were fully consolidated before birthing, some of them even already pinning in the jar, looked good to me, no visible contam. I dunked, rolled and birthed these about 6 days ago, following the Water Tub Tek. The coco coir layer ended up rather thick because otherwise it wouldn't stick, but already after 1 day the mycelium started regenerating/this marhsmallowy stuff started showing on the surface. There's now some normal looking mycelium and also some lonely pins (one of them already 1 inch long, maybe that was one of the in-vitro pins) with some fuzzy feet visible and a lot of this weird "blob" like stuff, which looks very dense and is fully white.

Sorry bout that, I was just hoping to get a broader opinion by posting this thread since it gets buried quickly in other threads. If that's not okay, feel free to delete this thread.

It just seems weird to me that this would happen with 2 different strains/syringes at the same time which makes it seem more like a problem with my technique than a genetic thing to me.
