Cool. Yeah I took the sleeve into my SAB and cut it open since I didn't plan on putting anything back in there anyway. Four other plates all randomly distributed through the sleeve had more of the mold at 10:30 o'clock and another had bacteria. So that all leads me to believe I contaminated these plates while pouring them. Wrapped the stack of clean ones in some cling wrap.

Nasty, nasty looking stuff man. It looked really crazy in the normal light. Like spiky almost. The condensation made it hard to get a good pic but it's at 12 o'clock in this image.

Is it possible to use unmodified metal ring lids for grain spawn by flipping them over and not tightening the ring? Up until now I've been using the two-hole/tyvek method. Has anyone used them with success?

I think it's possible but there might be a learning curve with the tightness.

Yeah, I’m really skeptical about this too but I do want to try it. I’m already seeing rust on the lids that I just made a couple months ago.

Just FYI to everyone using OG lids.

The investment into plastic lids with full size SFDs are certainly an initial investment upfront but for the long term health and sanity they offer, not to mention completely removing a vector for contamination, they are worth every penny. There's a reason they are ubiquitous in the industry.

My favorites are the ones paul stamets sells. I am not aware of a sponsor selling them otherwise I would link them directly.

I got some of the plastic lids and I tried to mod those too. I need to just get some good brand of plastic lids and so far I haven’t found one. Felt like I wasted 12 bucks on them.

Theoretically, if someone had followed sterile procedure perfectly up to spawn, and indeed had anexic spawn, but saw contamination after spawn to bulk, what could be the culprit? Are there environmental factors powerful enough to ruin a tub that was made the correct way?

I've been collecting plastic lids from empty jars of peanut butter, mayo, etc. I figure I'll just use the metal lids until I eat enough PB & M sandwiches

Drill 1/4"-1/2 inch hole in plastic lid.

Nestle SFD underneath.

Done.

Do you think he had a dirty tap?
I would just say something happened in the house that you weren’t aware of like something fell over a cat or dog just went in there and scratch themselves. Maybe there was some hidden debris floating in the air air that you didn’t know about when you came into the room to do your mono.

Let’s pretend this problem has also been ongoing for 3 years and all sensible changes have been made without results. Flowhood and PC are being used. Many coir brands have been tried. Agar and spawn appear clean.

Tubs die before or right after first flush.

You don't adhere it. It just fits snugly underneath. Thats what it's designed to do.

Bottle water and PCing coir is my next suggestion. Im just wondering - if and when that fails - if there’s an environmental factor that is harsh enough to cause that failure rate despite the tubs being otherwise healthy.

It definitely could be the water
