BRF cake has two germinations 1

I prepared some BRF cakes a few weeks ago and I injected some spores and what I have is interesting. It appears I have some very white mycelium growing on one side I injected and something that looks like mycelium on the other side I injected but I feel it might be mould, bit its not green as I have had many times here, it looks like cobweb mould but I am not sure as the gap is so thin in the jars. As there isn't much room on the sides of a BRF cake the mould looking growth could be mycelium but it isn't anywhere near as white as the other side of the jar. I made two open injection ports on each lid as per the guide on this forum somewhere. Any help identifying what I have growing in these jars would be very helpful π

I concur, mycelium and mold. Those jam jars are great to reuse though.

I'm a novice here, but to me it all looks like mycelium, with the bright-white culture possibly fighting off a bacterial contaminant
In the OP, you mentioned "very white mycelium" and "something that looks like mycelium on the other side" that might be mould. From what I've read, the "very white" culture would have a higher probability of being an unwanted mold, and an even higher probability of being good mycelium fighting a bacterial contaminant (if this is incorrect, I'd appreciate being corrected!). The less-white culture appears to have the healthier growth of the two.

CanΒ΄t see mold, but marshmallow bacterial mycelium. Also uneven top and not filled to the rim, dry verm barrier applied?

I just did my first batch of jars and I had a few that looked like this. It can be really hard to tell - just let it keep colonizing and see if it fruits!

Oh they are, when I get failures I wash them by hand then into the dishwasher they go. After that I make more BRF cakes then they go into the pressure canner ππ

Interesting you say this because I have transferred some of the less white grey looking mould/mycelium to some plates from an identical jar and its behaving like mould on my agar plates, its not spreading out like my other successful transfers. When I get home today I will transfer some of the bright white looking mycelium and do a comparison and I will post pics of the results.

Yes, there is a thick dry verm layer, the reason it looks like it does is because the guide says to NOT pack down the initial mixture you make in a bowl when adding it to the jars, the guide says to make it light and fluffy and drop it into the jars which is what I do. I then put a thick verm layer over the top to seal it out and I do push it down slightly at that point. After sterilising in the pressure canner the jars have all sunk slightly due to the high temperature. And for this reason I have purchased some longer needles to get through the thick verm layer so the spores actually reach the BRF cake. Also, for the photos I tip the jars back to get a better light angel so my photos are clear. Hope this makes sense to you now I have explained that.

What are your thoughts on which is which? I still feel in my gut that the whiter growth is mycelium but in some pics particularly the one taken from under the base of my jar the growth to the left has those wispy mycelium strands so its still a little tricky to isolate on agar at the moment as all I appear to be getting is what looks like very white mould, at least I think it isβ¦.
