What kind of tree is it growing on? Is it orange/golden brown inside?

I think the tree is Ash. The tree is still alive.

Found in Western Europe.

The inside (I broke a small piece) was very dark brown.

Doesn't look like chaga. It's usually yellowish orange or golden inside, when it gets older it does go really dark brown, but still don't think that's it.

OK. This one has been there for some years already. I have to dive in photos to find a benchmark.

They are usually found in birch but I have read other trees like ash and oak have had them.

Silver birch trees are host most common.
Op you don't have Chaga but search silver birch stands before leaves grow
Good luck 👍 :goodluck:

Old polypore of sorts. Not chaga though.

Ah bummer.

If anyone has an idea or thought about the species, ideas are welcome. For the fun of it I'll try to clone it anyways .

Shaggy bracket (Inonotus hispidus) would be my guess.
