Can I use flower earth as bulk substrate?
    #28668309 - 02/20/24 02:57 PM (4 months, 3 days ago)

Hey guys,
im really new to growing mushrooms (never did it to be exact) and I did some research the past days. I bet this question or at least a similar one has been asked a thousand times but im always better safe than sorry.
In many videos and online instructions a bulk substrate was mentioned.. I understood it like this: it's mainly to store water to give it to the mushroom to grow and its preventing contamination by lying over the myzel (is that correct?) I often saw a combination of coco coir, vermiculite and gypsum where the coco coir and vermiculite act as waterstorages and the gypsum delivers nutrition (hope im correct here again..?) now I was asking myself if I can just replace that mixture with coco coir based dried flower earth, it gives nutrition and stores water so why shouldn't it work..(its also a lot cheaper).

Now im asking you experienced mushrooms veterans for you advice.. will this work is it not sterile enough to grow mushrooms and will they start to rot?
thanks for your help in advance and have a lovely day <3 puk

Just plain coir, nothing else.

Gypsum is useless and potting soil will invite molds.

You could add verm in case you are over field capacity, but it's not *needed* either.

We let our source of nutrients fully colonize before exposing it to open air cause mold likes to eat the same thing as our fungus of choice. Your nutritious soil will just be a buffet for mold. Bulk sub is not nutritional, it's just there to hold water.

Free nutrients grow molds
