Can a [true] casing layer induce fruiting of certain mushrooms?

Following my first run of cubes, I started pseudo-casing/top layering all of my tubs with a compressed top layer comprised of 20-30% of the total sub (at time of S2B) and it has worked out fairly well thus far with all cube varieties I have attempted.
This is my first time running nats and I have heard a mixed bag of advice regarding ideal conditions.
Some say you need not do anything differently than you would with cubes.
Some say yes to top layer, while others claim it increases overlay.
Some say to compress, others say to keep things loose.
Some say your FAE conditions must be considerably higher.
Some say you must use a true casing layer with a high pH, non-nutrient layer comprised of peat moss, vermiculite and lime. Others say it’s completely unnecessary.
Meanwhile, others claim that overlay is strictly genetic and therefore none of the above even makes a difference; if it’s going to overlay, there’s no fixing it.
So WHICH IS IT?!

Here we have the LC test plate, which (sorry I don’t have a better photo, but it did come back clean)

Here’s a somewhat unrelated photo of the T1 from that text plate.

Here’s a peek at one of the grain jars used. You can see that the surface started to ball up a bit.

Anyway here’s the surfaces of the two tubs I made:

Can’t decide if I should LITFA or try some of this Jiffy Mix I picked up as a casing layer.
Jiffy Seed Start Mix is a combination of peat moss, vermiculite, and lime and is allegedly pH balanced. I haven’t tested the pH yet but assume it’s somewhere around 6.5-7.5 which is normal for seed start…
I also picked up some of this lime to increase pH since it’s best to increase to around 8-8.5 for a casing layer

Also, I know we all generally like to crap on Reddit posts but this Natalensis GordoTek one piqued my interest where he cased half the tub and left the other half alone. While both fruited, there was considerably denser and more vigorous growth on the cased side.

From what I’ve been able to see it’s mostly genetic but everyone’s conditions are going to be different so there’s no real one size fits all tek as yet, case 1/2 as well if you want, then you’ll know next time what to do with those same genetics

There was a post on here last week with a similar situation with Nats. The guy ended up scraping away about an inch of myc from the top and it pinned 12 hours later. I know scraping isn’t a preferred method but it worked for him with the nats. Just throwing it out there if you run out of ideas

@3am thank you, this is what I ended up doing after first pasteurizing the jiffy mix. I also did some weird math in lieu of finding my soil pH meter which I had 4 at one point that have all vanished
Since we know that lime can be added in the amount of 1 tablespoon per cubic foot to bring a soil up around 1 point…and the jiffy mix bags are 12 dry quarts, that’s approx. .4 of a cubic foot. And since a casing layer should ideally be between 8 and 8.5 on the pH scale, I would need to add 1.24 teaspoons to raise that 12qts 1 point. So…that’s what I did and just crossed my fingers.
@Mwj12977, I did see that thread, but surface scraping is freaky to me so I really only want to do that as an absolute last resort. Eek.
@stubb, awww thank you my love. You’re always so generous with your gas ups! I sincerely appreciate it. But I want to know what that handsome little devil fiddy said because for some weird reason it’s not showing on my end…did he delete it? he just went to bed—the suspense is killing me.

Hey guys sorry I didn’t know this was going on, most of you don’t realize mommy and I talk regularly and are close in the discord servers. Please don’t think I am a creep or anything guys, this was an inside joke between us, nothing more.
So sorry I just felt like I should take the time to clear that up. I had a momentary lapse in judgment and realize it was my fault that this was said in the wrong context, in the wrong forum.
If you don’t believe me, I encourage each and every one of you to message her personally to confirm.

It’s back now. Fiddy somehow was on my ignore list. If I did that, it was by accident and if it was a mod then that’s HILARIOUS

idk why but my post got deleted and it spooked me. it would have had to have been a mod to put me on her ignore list and delete that comment beause i sure didnt
¨idk but ur hot lady¨
that was what i said lol
stubb is right there is some strangeness and mystery afoot inn this post
as far as i know none of the mods have grudges against me fuckin weird
anyway yeah i agree with 3AM that its probably mostly genetics and epigenetic response/environmental stimulus, but I can´t say for sure. different cultures will perform differently and present different traits and often behave in ways that are contradictory or seeminglly without rhyme or reason. as far as growing nats goes; i cannot really say but if I were growing them I would just do a top layer and a true casing to see how your nat culture performs with each.
