Brown rice instead of grain?

I would like to ask you all if you use brown rice or grain for your mycelium? I currently use grain which appears to have been simple enough to prep. How different is brown rice? You still soak it I presume? Not sure on this because when I eat white long grain rice I soak it overnight and keep rinsing the water the next day to get the starch out of it then I boil it for around 5/10 minutes and its done. Thing is I wont be eating this so what is your experience on prepping brown rice the best way for sterilising so you don't get a pile of mush at the bottom of the jars?

Brown rice is easy to prep, easy to over hydrate it. A lot of people don't like it because it's easy to over hydrate and then it clumps together so it's hard to break and shake in the jars.
From what I have seen and read BR colonizes the fastest, but most people still prefer things like rye. I only use brown rice currently because I don't have a pressure cooker and you can get away with steam sterilizing BR easier.

Whole grain brown rice is dope if you're using Uncle Ben Tek.
However-- you may have issues trying to use rice as its more likely to become gelatinous/gooey upon pressure cooking.
I prefer using Oats as they're cheap & easy to buy in bulk.

Uncle bens sucks ass, there's a reason we lock UB threads here. Please don't suggest such poor "teks" like UB. Clean spores on agar then go to grain, don't shoot spores into bags of half cooked rice.

Can't you get wheat berries from an indian/Asian grocers? Rice sucks as a grain. It clumps and gets starchy, you want something like wheat, rye, oats, or millet/wbs. Don't listen to anyone telling you to do ub or using rice. Stick to trusted teks and practices.

Never did me wrong, I've had great success fruiting ben cakes directly into a SGFC or spawning them to bulk.
It's an awesome option if you don't want to deal with sterilizing grain or want to test batches quickly.

Brown Rice is a trusted tek lol. If you rinse your rice off and don't over cook them they don't really stick together much. I guess I've just had better luck.
But screw UB stuff, just a waste of time and resources.

I'm a rocket and an occasional fire engine... trust me.
But seriously, no place for UB here.

UB tek is awful, don't push that shit around here. You might have good results, doesn't mean it's something that should be pursued.

OP. Look at Violet's main threads for brown rice prep and methods.

Glad it works for you. There is an informal policy of steering new growers towards preparing their grains to increase chances of success.

And we would appreciate it if you keep the UB discussion in the UB thread. Post your successes there and change our minds.

Brown rice works fine as a grain. You have to watch the hydration, but when properly prepared, cubensis loves it. It has an advantage in that it typically harbors few endospores, so it's more tolerant for people without pressure cookers, hence Broke Boi Tek.
The reason I don't use brown rice is that it's much more expensive than oats (my normal grain). House brand brown rice is $2/lb at my local store. Oats are $20/50lbs at my nearby feed store, or $0.40/lb.

I vote for brown rice yo!
TBH, I would still rather use nano plastic infused UB 90 second rice bags (what a rip off though, just buy it in bulk and learn to cook rice lol) than cheap & toxic chlormequat contaminated oats. 4/5 people now test positive for those chemicals in recent breaking news studies. Remember that when ya'll dis on lame UB and push toxic oat tek instead haha.

Tbh you prolly ran 10 cakes or whatever it is yall do with UB and call it a success lol give me a real contam rate on 100 tubs and let me know results, also very true about the pesticides I think more public testing needs to be done to truly confirm you know how agendas are pushed in the media to us, but what do you think all those ingredients are on the back of your UB packaging it's safe because your government says its safe? I bet you believe the government whole heartedly.

I reiterate do 100 tubs give us results or whatever yall do with UB. It's like duct taping two pieces of metal together and calling it fixed sure it's "fixed" but you need weld it together so it's really fixed. It just helps people starting put not getting guided down the wrong way when I first started growing it took forever to figure stuff out because of wack outdated info help the new guy as you would help yourself
I'm pretty sure alot of the brown rice stuff is based off Paul stamets study which is kinda ifffy
Brown rice has as many endospores mold bacteria as the next grain grown outside lol look up all the studies of bacillius ppm (cfu/g) that is safe for human consumption that's in brown rice that's in your UB ready for you to eat or your mushies to eat

I started out learning to use WBS , then I got oats and millet, I tried that drippy corn tek and it was just as slow as regular grain. I decided to try brown rice recently and holy cow, my pans colonized that quart jar of rice in a week. Another strain I have of natalensis and gold member same thing. I mixed some brown rice with millet about 50/50 and subtropicalis colonized almost as fast. I think I'll be mixing brown rice as a booster for speed with my other grain until they're all used up n then I might do 100% brown rice. It only takes 8 to 10 minutes to fully hydrate in a boil and then you rinse in cold water to stop the cooking process and to rinse off the excess starch and lay it out to dry for a couple hours n you're good. I don't get the hate on brown rice I'm basically a newbie and I've never had clumping issues.
