been away, practicing, this is what I've learned * 3

Sup, gang? It's been a long while since I posted in the cult community. I feel like I learned my ass off on the forums for a few years until I knew most of what I could learn from reading about cult, so I've just been quietly practicing. I've learned a lot, made lots of mistakes, done a lot of panicking and considered quitting many times. I'm almost 5 years deep into the art of mycology. Here are some big lessons from the last 3 years:

- Nailing grain prep is a must. Large grains must be boiled rather than soaked to hydrate through to the center. Overhydrating bursts grains and makes them vulnerable to contamination. I have had a hard time finding the balance where grains are cooked through and not burst. This is a big part of the reason I switched to millet. Millet can be soaked overnight, creating consistent hydration, requires no cooking and has tons of inoculation points. Love that stuff. I struggled with grain hydration for like 3 years until maybe a year ago.

- Boiling water for coir prep must happen in a clean pot. I was using the same big pot to boil grain. This had to be the cause of most of my contamination for the past 2 years. Silly!!

- I use heavy nutrient LC. 5g corn flour, 2g LME, 400ml water. My myc grows thicccc. I also only stir em, gently but thoroughly, every 3 days. These conditions and this recipe is what my experimentation has proved to work best for me.

- Still air pockets can lead to contamination. The best FAE control in a fruit room is probably a ceiling fan. If you don't have that option, do your best to mimic one with what you got. Steady air movement throughout the room. leave a door open so the co2 can be replaced with fresher air.

- FUNGUS GNATS! Man, these had me depressed for a lil while. Nothing was working very effectively. I tried everything except gassing the place. I had a BTI spray bottle that I used to treat substrate tops. Didn't have much population effect. It was my only sprayer so I used it to mist the walls of my monos before laying them to make the lining stick. Almost all the flies disappeared! Totally surprised me but I think the BTI bacteria survived in the condensation of the mono walls, where the adult gnats hung out, and they spread the larva eating bti on their bodies with them to treat wherever they layed their eggs. I think it might have killed the adults too. Dead on the walls. This one was a miracle. IN MY EXPERIENCE, BTI SPRAYING MONO WALLS WHEN LINING THEM CRUSHES FUNGUS GNAT POPULATION WHEN NOTHING ELSE WORKED. Spraying the casing when I layed the tubs had contaminating effect sometimes.

- Fastest path to a dope clone culture from spores. Spore->BRF puck->clone fruits (largest/clustered/invitro, first pins)

More lil notes:
- Coco bliss is my #1 coir brand
- AA75xs are very useful but not very well built. I had to rewire a number of them after they arc'd out and blew the breaker.
- Weston 80L dehydrator is my rec for large quantities
- Gallon bags nocked with 100L LC in a FH Colonize fastest when the LC is spread around the walls by GENTLY tilting the bag around after resealing. Don't wet the filt!
- Dial in your fruiting conditions and substrate conditions by experimenting with like 6+ tubs of each conditions so you can see what works best, consistently. Play with substrate water content, sub to grain ratio, casing quantity. Label every tub with lots of info. Different cultures like different approaches.
- Work slowly and intentionally in the FH. Quick moves and lack of focus are the most likely contam vectors.
- My LC sweet spot seems to be 5 weeks old. I try to use it then.
- A medium misting after a flush is plenty rehydration IME.
- When your grain spawn is consistently healthy and strong you can mix up 6+ grain bags with substrate in a big tote and measure it into the monos after. Make sure to clean out all the grain between uses
- Be gentle with your myc when you lay tubs/shake bags for faster recovery.

Aight, aight. Here's some proof.

PE, Mexicana fruits, Tamp stones and APE struggles.

Happy to give advice or answer questions! Thx for reading. Wouldn't be here without the shroomery.

I like what you got going on👍. How are you doing your millet prep?
