Now works. I usually don't get to em that soon. Later also works as long as the plate is clean otherwise

With cubes, is it common for the compressed top layer to not fully colonize before pinning? This is a 1:3 tub with 1cm top layer. I've seen photos where tubs get completely covered with white mycelium, but I've seen others that look like mine.
Day 8, I'm starting to see knots:

My first tub also looked similar to this, but then knots suddenly covered the entire surface, even the parts that looked "uncolonized" before. Is this caused by genetics or something else?
I don't mind it, but it makes it more difficult to judge surface conditions as there are no beads of water on the uncolonized surface.

Looks great.
At this point i donโt mind it being a tad dry. Let that top layer evaporate.

Hey Everybody.
I got ape growing out on some agar from an LC purchased from a trusted vendor. I've heard that ape can be a slow grower but I'm curious about the way this mycelium looks. What's up with the rings ? The shape is just from a little extra lc getting dumped on than i wanted. I just poured new plates so IL probably take a transfer to see what happens but wanted to check what yall think, especially if you've grown APE. Thank you!

It's just mold. I'd try at least 5 plates to see if is just you, but I don't see any good there

Flick the plate with your finger a few times and see if it turns green.

I did that. I'm not sure how quickly its supposed to turn green. It still looks the same. But it does look suspect right ? I'd be bummed if this syringe was a bust. I'm pretty excited for these. Tidal wave looks to be doing good though.

Couple hours for green to form if there were spores clinging ready to pop.
Parts look... disorganized to be sure and possibly discolored but some parts just look tomentose to me. I dunno. I've seen worse plates. I think it's worth transferring from the more uniform sectors.

Some people say it has to do with temp swings or nutrient distribution (unlikely) but it just looks Tomentose to me. I am in agreeance with tiger here on it being a donor.

Hi everyone.
Is it bad practice to use Vermiculite straight out the bag?
Anyone do this without issue?

Absolutely do this every time. I make coir in a bucket by itself as I don't use verm in all my grows. And I don't use it at the same ratio in all my grows.

Is smaller vermiculite better for casings?
I'm using the big bag from home depot and the size is inconsistent. I'm thinking I'd get better pinsets with a finer grade verm.

StockW, I don't have a tape measure but I think mine is about 4.5-5 inches, and 15cm is 6", so you should be good. (I don't have a tape measure but I know exactly how big 1/4" is, and 2.5". Exactly.
Treefrog, the other day I did the first casing, but I used coir, I thought I was doing correct ... Is it coir and verm? Or just verm? Thanks, I have learned a bunch in less than 2 months

Casing is generally peat/verm with picklin lime as you don't want it to clonize casing. It's also completely unnecessary for domesticated cubes (I mostly grow exotics
That said, I "top dress" some species with coir/verm (cubes included) and top dressing with coir is fine. Some people don't bother but the colony prefers to use water that's at the top to make mushrooms.
Less work to move shit uphill. Here's a recent research paper on how colonies of poo lovers move water.

I spawned my ps cyans in Sep... It's been 5 months since
I used only a tiny chunk of a brf cake in hopes it'll spread and colonize before spring starts

Approximately how many nickel or quarter-sized circles can be cut out of one 90mm synthetic filter disc?
