Tripped 40 or so times. Athiest
    #28665655 - 02/18/24 02:25 PM (4 months, 5 days ago)

I have had a lot of experience with psilocybin mushrooms in my life and i think its stupid when people say psychedelics are sacred. i knew the difference between drug effects/hallucinations and reality....i didnt go away saying something happened in my mind on mushrooms therefor it must prove we are all God.Fools get spiritual after drugs or at least its a mental illness caused by the drugs.

I’ve never heard anyone say the psychedelic experience proves god exists or proves that we are all god.

It can increase your openness such that you may better understand concepts like ‘all of us being one’ and ‘everyone having the force of creation inside of them’, things like that.

How do you think psilocybin has changed you?

also, 40 or so trips isn’t that much in the grand scheme of things. It actually doesn’t matter how many times you’ve tripped, it’s more about the insights you gain along the way.

I’ve tripped a lot. I’m still an atheist. But I am open to the idea that we are all god because I think it’s a nice idea… it gives you a sense of connection to everything around you.

I don’t believe in an all knowing, all powerful god. I just believe that the word god means “creation force of the universe” or something (which is basically synonymous with the word universe in my mind).

We are all the universe, the universe is inside us all and surrounds us all.

Why did you do them 40 times if you didn’t enjoy it and found that it worsened your mental health? Curiosity?

If you’ve found they have had a negative impact on you then you might be someone that shouldn’t take them. Or maybe it was the wrong period of your life to take them.

I’ve had a lot of good times and some really bad times. Some of the bad times did leave me feeling like I had lost some sanity for sure, but after a while you go back to normal and you learn how to work better with them.

Sometimes you need to take a big break and really sort your life out first.

I'm an athiest myself but I still refer to them a sacred from time to time but in a downplayed sense of the word like how people say "theory" when they mean "hypothesis" but everyone knows what is meant.

Aside from that, people are going to believe what they're going to believe and if they believe that a fungus is a literal connection to a god then so be it. This concept goes way back thousands of years so to call is stupid is a bit condescending. I will point out that religious use of psychedelics tends to come with more ritual and discipline which can actually be beneficial to the experience. I'm jealous of that aspect.

I do feel a spiritual connection with psychedelics as well, albeit in a more secular, Carl Sagan-esque way.

Things I've learned so far:

Death with consciousness can be boring. Balance is important. Set intentions, not expectations. Sad trips can be helpful as well as challenging trips. Stick with your first dose. We learn more when we listen rather than speak. Be kind. The small moments in life that tend to go unnoticed are sometimes the most beautiful.

This is like you took the words right out of my brain. The "creator God" that religious folks talk about feels so absurd to me, but I think psilocybin has broadened my view to an interpretation of God as being the wonder of the existence of everything, which I could see regarding as sacred. It's really up to the individual -- if someone genuinely considers something to be sacred, who's business is it to tell them it's not?

Another atheist here. I consider mushrooms something that needs to be approached with respect, not foolishly. They're certainly not a toy. And anyone who has had a bad trip or at least a challenging trip will understand why I say they must be respected. Not because of a superstitious belief but because they can really mess you up if you're not  careful with set, setting and substance amount. If this qualifies mushrooms as being sacred, so be it. I won't argue with semantics.

As someone who for a long time tried to believe in the existence of God and studied about the religion I grew up with I will respect other people's beliefs. Even if they are not in line with mine. I won't spend my time trying to convince or criticize anyone.

How so? Im curious.

Mushrooms definitely cannot make you have a Spiritual Experience or "visit God", but it can for some people. For other people, there seems to a lack of that mystical side of Mushrooms. I wonder why? :strokebeard:

I think it depends a lot on how you were brought up and the culture you were exposed to. As I’ve slowly been exposed to different cultural ideas over the years my mind has broadened and I think mushrooms and other psychedelics have helped me to see the value in other cultures belief systems

Psychedelics amplify preexisting belief. If you're an athiest before, it'll make you more so. If you're religious before, it'll make you more of that.

I think Atheism can be confused with disrespect-ism, and disrespect-ism can certainly lead to fucked-up-ism.

I have not been a God fearing fellow since the age of 11, but I have been wary of persons with power.
Psychedelics, for me have been terrific door openers, exposing the nature of perception, and helping me learn how to make great moments more frequent and last longer. <-- that trick can be called spiritual, or perhaps transcendental, but it is not the work of god, nor is it the work of psychedelics, it is my way of being, and each of us must find their own.

I don’t agree. I think it’s possible for them to have that effect, but certainly not exclusively.

I disagree. I was nihilistic, after I had a powerful psychedelic experience. I would consider myself spiritual.

I want to say I've seen examples of athiests turning religious after a psychedelic experience right here on shroomery. I know of at least one caller on the Atheist Experience saying he turned his belief to God after a DMT trip.

I definitely think so. I was atheist/agnostic before getting into shrooms. The shrooms brought out the agnostic thoughts where I would have debates with myself about the existence of God and the Soul or if there was even any purpose to Life or if it all just "random and pointless".

Well nowadays, I fully believe in Creation and the Soul of Everything, including inanimate objects. Shrooms helped me get there, but I did not have a specific experience that made me a believer. Various books I read really made me a believer more than psychedelics. Psychedelics sorta just confirmed it for me further.

I did have one single experience that I would classify as specifically Spiritual relating to the concept of Creation and I have taken a lot of shrooms in my lifetime. That one experience is very special to me.

It was my "I Felt the Source" Experience: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24610817#24610817

Yeah, I suppose I haven’t really drastically changed my beliefs due to psychedelics, but I feel like it’s opened some doors. And I feel like I’m less inclined to judge others harshly based on what they believe as long as it doesn’t hurt other people… but maybe that was just me growing up. I don’t know for sure how much psychedelics have influenced my worldview, but I feel like they have increased my openness and feelings of connection somewhat.

I do remember a time where rough shroom experiences made me feel more distanced from the world though… so I feel like it can go either way, and it has a lot to do with how you approach the trip.

The distanced feelings were also compounded by the fact that I didn’t know many people who enjoyed tripping as much as me, and I felt like the thing that I enjoyed was frowned upon.

I was very spiritual and woo when I was younger, but the exposure to infinity and endless paradox in psychedelics beat it out of me. I could no longer reconcile faiths I'd previously held after looking deep into the vortex and just finding infinite patterns. There was nothing there, just me.

If a god presents itself to me I'll be totally into it though. Hey, sign me up. Finally a sign that it's more than infinite mathematical chaos.

I believe people really take mushrooms to try to get their natural senses back and feel more animal again....to get rid of the numbness society causes and look at things from different perspectives.
