Let’s Get Creative: Making Art for Wellness * 4
    #28665489 - 02/18/24 12:58 PM (4 months, 6 days ago)

Dear Friends,

This is an invitation to join me in exploring the transformative power of art! Inspired by the profound impact of creative expression on my own well-being, I’ve created this thread as space to engage in therapeutic art exercises together.

Art therapy isn’t just about creating; it’s scientifically proven to reduce stress, enhance self-awareness, and promote mental wellness. Plus, it stimulates neuroplasticity, enhancing cognitive function and emotional resilience. How friggin’ cool is that?

Whether you’re an experienced artist or brand new to creative exploration, you’re welcome here. It is my hope that we can cultivate a supportive environment for sharing experiences, insights, and artwork as we journey together.

Addt’l Notes/Expectations:

1. No artistic skills needed; focus on process rather than product.
2. Your creations are yours alone; sharing is completely optional.
3. Be respectful; avoid judgements.
4. Be mindful of your inner critic voice; it will lessen with consistent practice.
5. I’ll share art exercises and answer questions, but please keep in mind I’m not a professional therapist.

Details about the 1st exercise will be in my next comment below. I hope you will join me!

Exercise #1: A Purposeful Mess

Goal: To let go of expectations & perfectionism

Suggested Time Commitment: 30 minutes

Medium: Painting

Instructions:
Make a messy creation using paint & any other materials you feel intuitively drawn to. Release stress by splattering paint, scribbling, finger painting, or whatever you feel like you “shouldn’t” do when making art. Pay attention to any rules you might start to tell yourself, see if you can break them! Tip: if you feel yourself getting stuck or blocked, try asking yourself “What would happen if I ____?” and try doing the first thing that pops into your head, don’t overthink it!

Recommended Materials:
  • Acrylic paint (or watercolor, gouache, tempera.. or whatever you have on hand)
  • Surface to paint on such as mixed media paper, canvas, etc.
  • Paintbrushes or other mark making tools
  • Something to prevent paint going where you don’t want (dropcloth, cardboard etc.)
  • (optional) Pen, markers, chalk or oil pastels

Explorative Questions:
  • How do you feel after doing this exercise?
  • Did any critical voices come up? If so, how did you respond?
  • If your art had a voice, what might it say?

Getting set up to do exercise 1 tonight, I’ve gathered my supplies

Before:

After:

Notes:
-Before starting to paint, I spent about 5 minutes thinking about what I am grateful for and setting my intent to try to enter into the experience with respect, care, and love. Then put music on & spent about 35 minutes painting.
-During the process I had a lot of back and forth with my inner critic, who was louder than usual, triggered by my intent to share work here where others would see it. I tried to drown it out by focusing on the music, movement, leaning into being present playing with brushstrokes and what felt the most enjoyable to do. I also tried to notice when I start trying to force things too much, to let go of control & instead go where things felt easy/effortless.
-After the exercise, I felt a great deal calmer, peaceful and relaxed.

I misunderstood the purpose of the thread.  Most of my art is in other media but I'll try to stop back in and support this idea when I have more time to explore it

I like that niggarding is in the first Shakespearean sonnet.

#2: Emotional Landscape

Goal: Identify Feelings

Suggested Time Commitment: 5 min prep, 45 min creating

Medium: Painting

Materials:
  • 1 sheet of 18-by-24-inch heavy-weight drawing paper
  • Drawing pencil
  • Paintbrush
  • Watercolors
  • Cup of water

Instructions:
An emotional landscape is a metaphor for how you feel. This is an opportunity to explore your feelings in a symbolic way. How do your current emotions translate into a scene? Think of your landscape as having a background, middle ground, and foreground. Be as creative as you want with your visualization.

Steps:
    1. Sit for five minutes and evaluate your current state of mind. Consider what feelings and emotions are alive in you at this moment. Think of a landscape that would visually represent your current mood. Feel free to find images in books or on the internet to inspire you.
    2. On the paper, sketch the landscape you’ve visualized.
    3. With a paintbrush, use watercolors to add color to your landscape.
    4. Give your artwork a title.

Explorative Questions:
  • Does your painting speak to the emotions you’re feeling at the moment?
  • How long have you been feeling this way?
  • If you could put yourself into your painting, where would you be?
  • Is there a message in your painting?

Jung, I believe, encouraged his patients to explore and display their unconscious feelings thru art; so I'll don the psychiatric mask and ask "How does that make you feel?"

Nonetheless it may prove to be an invigorating impulse to your art.

I’ll let you know if it does. So, are you going to try making some art with me using the exercises I’ve posted, or what?

It's not out of the question, but I happen to be a real slow learner.

I see faces in things, in shadows in rocks and plastic, they would make a great study for me if I get my ducks in a row regarding materials.
