General questions about psilocybes.
    #2854869 - 07/03/04 09:00 PM (19 years, 8 months ago)

Just a couple of questions that I can't find clear answers to.

1) Are there any mushrooms with dark purple gills that are not psilocybes?

2) If not, are there any poisonous psilocybes or are they all edible even if they are not active? I am not interested because I plan to eat every purple-gilled mushroom that I find, but if I find non-actives that taste good, I would like to try cooking with them. Can it be assumed that psilocybes as a whole are safe to eat? If not, which are not?

Thanks.

1. Yes. For example, there are several species of Cortinarius that have purple gills when young. Many of these species are poisonous. There are also deadly poisonous species of Cortinarius.

2. The majority of species of Psilocybe are of unknown edibility and toxicity. None of them are rated as edible.

Happy mushrooming!

This has to be the most ridiculous request i've ever heard of in my life, if you do so, you will not be posting very frequently, as in never. Please do not do this, my father works in the emergency room and i'd hate for him to have to waste his time pumping "any purple-gilled" mushroom out of your stomach, and watching you die. You really need to read on the FAQ's before making anymore ridiculous, frankly retarded questions.

Actually, he just didn't word his post well. It could (correctly) be read to mean that he does indeed plan to eat every purple-gilled mushroom he finds.

Most Psilocybes I've seen don't have purple gills, they're more of a brown to pinkish grey color. I think about half the species in the Psilocybe genus are classified as inactive. There's plenty of poisonous mushrooms with darker gills. Don't go that route for eating mushrooms unless you're a big fan on hospitals, liver failure, kidney failure, vomiting, nausea, and diarreah.

Those who called me 'retarded', please re-read the post. I have never ingested a wild mushroom and never plan to without a very definite identification.

I was just wondering if dark purple gills were a unique feature of the psilocybe genus, because in the books I have read and the images I have seen on the internet I have never seen such a mushroom that did not turn out to be a psilocybe.

I am not stupid.

BTW, Thank you ToxicMan for your response. It is exactly the information that I was looking for.

The first part of that sentence about reading the FAQ is good, but the last part of that sentence is a FLAME.

No flames! We require a degree of civility in these forums. OTD is for flames, and we even have our limits there.
