Help identifying this fungi please
    #28661498 - 02/15/24 11:37 PM (4 months, 7 days ago)

Hi there,

I'm new to mushroom exploration and foraging...having a great time starting out, although it's a little overwhelming at times trying to identify correctly.

I found the attached beauties in a cow pasture in NSW mid coast after a big day of rain and very humid days (30 degrees c).

They were in a small group not far from water, sticking out of the dung directly in leafy surrounds.

Gills appear brown, cap has a sticky residue and mottled brown with shades of white/gold.

Stems are thick and fibrous.

Spore print revealed to be dark violet then turning black after 12 or so hours.

The bruising, however, did not appear straight away, and a blue/purple colour was not apparent. More black than purple, but quite faint.

They have a nice earthy aroma.

Thank you in advance for your thoughts. I'm loving the science!

Thanks heaps for your reply  My concern is they don't appear to have purple bruising, more black than purple or blue, so could be poisonous look-alikes.

You’re not looking for purple bruising, you’re looking for blue bruising which slowly gets darker. Sometimes it can go from bright blue to a very deep navy-blue and almost black.

Your mushrooms are old and waterlogged so the blueing reaction might not be as easy to see for a beginner, but I can definitely see blue on them. It’s kind of a dark blueish black with some greenish hues (which is normal for cubensis).

There is no doubt in my mind that these are Psilocybe cubensis.

Edit: but… if you don’t feel good about eating them then don’t.

Thank you so much for your comments.
I’m loving the process and learning an incredible amount about mushroom IDing.
Can’t wait until my next forage!
