Casing Questions
    #2866470 - 07/07/04 09:35 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

I have only used the PF Tek method of colonizing jars with BRF. I am interested in trying grains.

I do not have a pressure cooker. By using the method suggested in the GrowFAQ (boiling three consecutive days) will I be relatively safe from contams? What is your experience with this? If this method is still sketchy for contams, I'll just go with the BRF.

Second, what do you recommend for casing mixes? I used the 50/50+ (peat moss, verm, oyster shells) last time. I am interested in trying either cocoa coir 60/40 tek or using high mountain compost. If you recommend high mountain compost, how do you go about using this in a casing?

Your shrooms aren't getting near enough nutrients it seems like. I would use more peat moss, a good inch or so, incubate it for a good 5 days, and you will notice the mycelium will be much more stringy. When you pick your first one and notice the intense bruising, you'll be happy you waited the extra few days for the peat moss to colonize. That fuzzy stuff right now makes somewhat water logged mushrooms, and I can tell in you're picture the psilocin content isn't near as high as it could be.
